Bangladesh foreign policy amid geopolitical tension

Amid growing global and regional tensions, Dr. Rabi Alam, President of the Awami League USA (West). Strongly defended Bangladesh’s foreign policy direction and governance model. Speaking at a press event held in California on Wednesday, Dr. Alam emphasized Bangladesh’s steadfast commitment to neutrality and balanced diplomacy under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

The statement comes at a time when South Asia’s geopolitical landscape is under intense scrutiny. Due to shifting alliances and increased competition among major global powers. Bangladesh, strategically located between India and China and increasingly important to Western stakeholders. It has faced pressure to take clear sides — a position the Awami League has consistently resisted.

Adherence to Balanced Diplomacy

Dr. Alam asserted that the Awami League’s foreign policy is firmly rooted in “friendship to all, malice toward none,” a principle originally championed by Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

“Our government has maintained peace, cooperation, and open dialogue with all global actors,” said Dr. Alam. “Despite provocation and misinformation, Bangladesh will not become a pawn in international power games.”

He added that Bangladesh’s close cooperation with India, China, the United States, and the European Union is based on mutual respect and economic development, not on political alignment or dependency.

Governance and Economic Growth

The Awami League USA (West) President also took the opportunity to highlight Bangladesh’s domestic progress under Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Dr. Alam credited the Awami League government for transforming Bangladesh into one of the fastest-growing economies in South Asia, maintaining political stability, and expanding infrastructure and digital inclusion.

“Whether it’s the Padma Bridge, Metro Rail, or Digital Bangladesh Vision 2041, these achievements speak volumes about the party’s commitment to nation-building,” he said.

Dr. Alam acknowledged ongoing challenges such as inflation and unemployment but urged the public and diaspora communities to recognize the long-term national gains.

Criticism of Misinformation Campaigns

During the briefing, Dr. Alam also warned against what he termed “coordinated disinformation campaigns” orchestrated by opposition groups and certain international entities attempting to undermine Bangladesh’s sovereignty and political stability.

He accused elements of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and its allies of misrepresenting Bangladesh’s foreign alignments in Western media to erode international confidence in the Awami League.

“Bangladesh must not be seen through the lens of foreign interests alone. Our commitment is to the people, not to any one bloc or superpower,” he said.

Call for Diaspora Engagement

Dr. Alam urged members of the Bangladeshi diaspora in the United States and Europe to remain vigilant. Support the government’s development goals. And counter anti-Bangladesh narratives with facts and community engagement.

“We have a role to play in defending Bangladesh’s image abroad. Whether in Silicon Valley or New York, our voice matters in shaping international perception,” he said.

The Awami League USA (West) plans to hold a series of forums and academic panels in cities like Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Chicago to discuss foreign policy, human rights, and development in Bangladesh from a balanced, non-partisan perspective.

International Observers and Policy Experts Weigh In

Policy analysts have noted Bangladesh’s attempts to balance ties with Beijing and Washington. While securing infrastructure loans, energy cooperation, and trade partnerships. Professor William Andrews, a South Asia expert at the University of California, commented that “Bangladesh has managed a delicate balancing act, but continued transparency and democratic reforms will be key to its credibility.”

Bangladesh is currently participating in diplomatic exchanges with BRICS countries while reaffirming its alignment with UN peacekeeping commitments and South Asian regional forums like SAARC and BIMSTEC.
