Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankar Announced as BJP’s Pick for Vice President of India

In a significant political development, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) announced Jagdeep Dhankar, the current Governor of West Bengal, as its candidate for the Vice President of India. The decision was made during a parliamentary board meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and attended by several prominent party leaders.

Prime Minister Modi praised Dhankar, referring to him as ‘Kisan Putra’ or the son of a farmer, acknowledging his humble background and his dedicated service to the welfare of farmers, youth, women, and marginalized sections of society. Modi highlighted Dhankar’s extensive experience in law, legislation, and governance, stating that his deep understanding of the Constitution and legislative affairs would make him an outstanding Chair in the Rajya Sabha, the Upper House of the Indian Parliament.

The announcement received accolades from various political leaders. President Ram Nath Kovind and Union Home Minister Amit Shah congratulated Dhankar, recognizing his inspiring journey from a farmer’s son in Rajasthan to being nominated for the prestigious position of Vice President. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh praised Dhankar’s deep understanding of law and the Constitution, emphasizing the benefit India would derive from his years of public service.

Chief Ministers from different states, including Shivraj Singh Chouhan of Madhya Pradesh and Pramod Sawant of Goa, also expressed their congratulations and confidence in Dhankar’s ability to enhance the dignity of the Vice President’s role.

However, the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC), the ruling party in West Bengal, refrained from commenting on the Vice Presidential elections until July 21. AITC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh stated that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee would gather opinions from party MPs and MLAs before announcing their decision on the matter.

Jagdeep Dhankar’s tenure as the Governor of West Bengal has been marked by frequent clashes with the state government led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Despite the political challenges, Dhankar has remained steadfast in upholding democratic values and defending the Indian Constitution.

Before the announcement, Dhankar had a meeting with Prime Minister Modi and also held discussions with Home Minister Amit Shah. These interactions underscored the significance of his role as the potential Vice President and Chairman of the Rajya Sabha.

As the news of Jagdeep Dhankar’s selection as the NDA’s candidate for Vice President spreads, political circles are abuzz with anticipation for the upcoming Vice Presidential elections. Dhankar’s nomination reflects the BJP’s confidence in his abilities and his potential to contribute to the country’s progress.
