The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has demanded a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the deaths of two teenage girls in separate incidents in West Bengal, one of which was allegedly raped and killed by unidentified men. The BJP has also called for the resignation of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, claiming that women are no longer safe in the state under the Trinamool Congress’s (TMC) rule.
The first incident occurred in Kaliaganj in West Bengal’s Uttar Dinajpur district, where the body of a 17-year-old girl was found floating in a canal on April 21. Police arrested a 20-year-old man in connection with the incident on April 22. The second incident occurred in Malda district on April 25, where the body of a 15-year-old girl was found in a field.
These incidents have led to massive protests in the TMC-ruled state. The BJP MP from Hooghly, Locket Chatterjee, stated that “women are no longer safe in West Bengal. The state is on its way to becoming the rape capital of India the way such incidents are happening there,” and called for Banerjee to step down as chief minister for her “failure” to provide safety to women.
Meanwhile, BJP MP Khagen Murmu slammed Banerjee over the two incidents, stating that no one is safe in West Bengal under the TMC’s rule and that there is a “goonda raj” in the state. He further alleged that while the West Bengal Police is working under political pressure, those committing crimes in the state are confident that nothing will happen to them no matter what they do.
The BJP is demanding a CBI probe into these incidents and the strictest punishment for the perpetrators of the crimes. Murmu claimed that “people do not have faith in the state police as it works under political pressure.”
The incidents have once again raised concerns over the safety of women in India and the need for stronger laws and stricter punishments for perpetrators of sexual crimes. The demand for a CBI probe and the resignation of the chief minister highlights the political ramifications of such incidents in the country.
