A major controversy has erupted in Assam’s Dhubri district after cow meat, including a severed cow head, was allegedly found near Hindu temples on Tuesday. The incident has ignited communal tensions and drawn sharp reactions from political leaders and residents alike.
Local police have launched an investigation, while security has been tightened around sensitive areas. Members of the Hindu community staged protests, demanding strict action against those responsible for the “deliberate provocation.”
Ashok Singhal Links Incident to Demographic Change
Assam Health and Family Welfare Minister Ashok Singhal reacted strongly to the incident. Addressing reporters in Guwahati on June 11, Singhal said, “This is not an isolated act of mischief. It is a warning sign of a deeper conspiracy — a deliberate demographic change that is slowly eroding Assam’s cultural and spiritual identity.”
Singhal alleged that “organized efforts” were being made to provoke the majority community and disturb communal harmony. He also linked the incident to what he described as “unchecked infiltration and demographic shifts” in districts bordering Bangladesh.
Political and Public Reactions Pour In About Cow Head
The incident has triggered political debate across the state. Further, several BJP leaders backed Singhal’s statement, demanding a thorough probe and immediate arrests.
Opposition leaders, however, warned against communalizing the issue. Also, statement from the Assam Congress unit called for calm. Moreover, urged the state government to focus on maintaining law and order.
Local civil society groups also voiced concern. The All Assam Hindu Mahasabha, in a press release, said, “This act is a direct attack on our religious sentiments. The administration must act swiftly and transparently.”
Police Begin Probe, Security Stepped Up
Dhubri Superintendent of Police Suman Deka confirmed that forensic teams had collected samples from the site. CCTV footage is being examined to trace the culprits.
“We are treating this as a serious matter. A dedicated team is working on it. Any attempt to disturb peace will be dealt with strictly,” Deka said.
Security has been increased in Dhubri town and nearby areas. Also, patrolling teams and rapid action forces have been deployed to prevent escalation.
Historical Context: A Tense District
Dhubri, located along the India-Bangladesh border, has long been at the center of demographic and communal debates in Assam. The district has a mixed population, and past incidents have often triggered tensions between communities.
Minister Singhal reiterated his stand on the Assam NRC and anti-infiltration measures, saying, “What we are witnessing now are the consequences of decades of political appeasement and unchecked migration. We must act now to protect our land, culture, and beliefs.”
Call for Unity Amid Rising Tempers
Despite the outrage, leaders from all communities have appealed for peace. Furthermore, the Dhubri district administration held an emergency meeting with religious leaders and community representatives to diffuse tensions.
Deputy Commissioner Jyoti Kalita urged people to maintain peace and not fall for rumours. “Strict action will be taken against those spreading hate on social media. Let the law take its course,” she said.
