A new study by the Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) Mandi and Jammu has revealed alarming levels of contamination in the groundwater of Himachal Pradesh’s Baddi-Barotiwala (BB) industrial area. This contamination is linked to cancer-causing agents, posing significant health risks to the local population. The research, published in the journal Science of the Total Environment, highlights the presence of geogenic uranium and elevated levels of toxic metals such as zinc, lead, cobalt, nickel, and chromium in the groundwater.

Researchers employed advanced techniques to analyze groundwater samples from the region, pinpointing both natural and industrial sources of contamination. The findings show that industrial activities have significantly increased the concentration of these harmful metals, far exceeding safe limits.

Dr. Manish Singhal, Senior Consultant in Medical Oncology at Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, has emphasized the severe health implications of these contaminants. Prolonged exposure to these toxic substances can lead to serious health conditions, including cancer. “These pollutants pose a grave threat to public health, particularly with long-term exposure,” Dr. Singhal noted. The study underscores the urgent need for addressing the water quality crisis in India, especially in rapidly urbanizing and industrializing regions.

The BB industrial area has been under scrutiny due to the high incidence of cancer and kidney diseases reported between 2013 and 2018. Contaminated groundwater is suspected to be a major factor behind these health issues.
