Railways on high alert for Maha Kumbh weekend rush, tightens security at stations

As the Maha Kumbh Mela 2025 approaches its peak, Indian Railways has intensified security and operational measures to manage the anticipated influx of pilgrims. The festival, held in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, is expected to draw over 400 million devotees, making it one of the world’s largest religious gatherings. In light of recent tragic events, including a stampede at New Delhi Railway Station that resulted in multiple fatalities, authorities are on high alert to prevent further incidents.

Enhanced Security Measures

In response to the recent stampede at New Delhi Railway Station, which claimed at least 18 lives, Indian Railways has implemented stringent security protocols. Over 18,000 personnel from the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Government Railway Police (GRP) have been deployed across key stations to manage crowds and ensure passenger safety. Additionally, more than 1,400 CCTV cameras and 200 facial recognition systems have been installed for real-time monitoring. Prayagraj Junction, a central hub for pilgrims, now operates a 24/7 surveillance system to swiftly address any emerging issues.

Operational Adjustments

To accommodate the massive surge in travelers, Indian Railways has introduced 3,000 special trains, supplementing the existing 10,000 regular services over the 50-day festival period. This extensive network aims to facilitate seamless connectivity between Prayagraj and major cities nationwide. In the wake of the New Delhi incident, authorities have designated specific platforms for departing trains to reduce confusion and prevent overcrowding. For instance, all special trains to Prayagraj now depart exclusively from platform number 16 at New Delhi Railway Station.

Crowd Management Initiatives

Recognizing the challenges of managing such a vast congregation, Indian Railways has established 23 holding areas with a combined capacity to accommodate over 100,000 individuals. These zones serve as temporary waiting spaces, allowing for controlled and staggered boarding processes. To further streamline operations, the railways have introduced color-coded tickets and barcode-enabled Unreserved Ticketing System (UTS) tickets, facilitating efficient passenger movement and reducing the likelihood of bottlenecks.

Technological Advancements

Embracing modern technology, Indian Railways has integrated artificial intelligence and advanced surveillance tools to enhance crowd monitoring and response capabilities. The deployment of drones provides aerial oversight of crowded areas, enabling authorities to identify and address potential hazards promptly. These technological interventions are pivotal in ensuring the safety and well-being of the millions attending the festival.

Infrastructure Investments

In preparation for the Maha Kumbh Mela, the government has invested approximately ₹5,000 crore over the past three years to upgrade railway infrastructure in and around Prayagraj. This funding has been allocated for station renovations, track enhancements, and the expansion of passenger amenities, all aimed at providing a comfortable and secure travel experience for pilgrims.

Public Advisory

Authorities urge all attendees to remain vigilant and adhere to official guidelines to ensure personal safety and the well-being of fellow pilgrims. Passengers are encouraged to arrive at stations well in advance, follow designated routes, and cooperate with security personnel. By fostering a collective sense of responsibility, both officials and devotees can contribute to a harmonious and incident-free celebration.

The Maha Kumbh Mela 2025 stands as a testament to India’s rich cultural and spiritual heritage. Through comprehensive planning, technological integration, and public cooperation, Indian Railways aims to facilitate a safe and memorable pilgrimage for all participants.
