A Brief History of International Yoga Day

The idea for International Yoga Day was introduced by India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his speech at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on September 27, 2014. Additionally, he emphasised yoga’s ancient roots and its relevance in addressing modern health challenges.

Responding to the proposal, the UNGA declared June 21 as International Yoga Day in December 2014. The resolution was supported by 177 countries, making it one of the most widely backed proposals in UN history.

The first celebration took place on June 21, 2015, with massive participation across countries. Moreover, in India, thousands gathered on Rajpath in Delhi, led by PM Modi, creating a Guinness World Record for the largest yoga session ever held.
