Promoting sustainable tourism, the Tripura government has announced plans to convert the Ludhua Tea Estate in Sabroom, South Tripura, into a full-fledged eco-tourism park. The decision aligns with the state’s broader vision to boost green tourism, generate employment, and preserve natural landscapes.

Spread across 22 acres, Ludhua Tea Estate is already known for its high-quality black and green tea. Now, the picturesque tea gardens will serve a dual purpose—maintaining tea production while drawing nature-loving tourists from across the country.

Green Push in the Northeast

Tripura’s decision to focus on eco-tourism comes at a time when northeastern states are increasingly turning to sustainable development to harness their rich biodiversity. Thereafter, Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha has repeatedly emphasized the need to blend economic development with environmental conservation.

An official from the Tourism Department said, “The Ludhua Tea Estate eco-tourism project will be a model of development that protects the environment, promotes rural livelihoods. And showcases Tripura’s untapped beauty.”

The project will be executed by the Tourism and Forest departments in collaboration with the Tea Development Corporation. Amenities like walking trails, birdwatching towers, eco-cottages, a tea museum, and guided tea-tasting experiences are expected to be part of the upcoming infrastructure.

Boost for Local Economy

Local stakeholders have welcomed the move, calling it a step forward for the Sabroom subdivision, which lies near the India-Bangladesh border. “This will not only create jobs for youth but also encourage sustainable business opportunities for locals in the hospitality and craft sectors,” said local Panchayat member Ranjan Tripura.

The government also plans to promote local tribal culture, cuisine, and art as part of the tourist experience. Turning the estate into a comprehensive destination for eco-conscious travelers.

Tea Estate’s Legacy

The Ludhua Tea Estate was originally established to support the region’s agro-based economy and has been operational for decades. Also, the estate currently produces organic tea and provides livelihood to dozens of families in nearby villages.

“Even as we convert it into a tourist hub, we will continue tea production to maintain its original identity,” said a senior official of the Tripura Tea Development Corporation (TTDC). “The eco-tourism plan will enhance the estate’s value while preserving its green essence.”

Conservation with Recreation

Officials stated that strict environmental guidelines will be followed during the transformation. “We are committed to conserving the biodiversity of the region. Moreover, no large-scale construction will be allowed. All structures will be eco-friendly, using bamboo, wood, and local materials,” the Forest Department confirmed.

Tripura already boasts several eco-tourism hotspots such as Sepahijala Wildlife Sanctuary, Neermahal, and Jampui Hills. The addition of Ludhua will strengthen the state’s tourism portfolio, especially in the underdeveloped southern belt.

Regional Tourism Strategy

This initiative is part of the broader Tripura Tourism Policy aimed at turning the state into a year-round tourist destination. With improved connectivity through the Sabroom rail line and the Maitri Setu bridge linking Bangladesh. Officials hope Ludhua will draw both domestic and international tourists.

Public Encouragement and Call to Action

Tourism experts and environmentalists have praised the move and urged locals to participate in and protect the project. Social media campaigns are already being planned to raise awareness and promote Ludhua as Tripura’s next green getaway.

The state government encourages entrepreneurs, travel agencies, and NGOs to collaborate in making Ludhua a success. “This is your chance to be part of something sustainable and beautiful,” said the Tourism Minister in a recent press conference.

The transformation of Ludhua Tea Estate into an eco-tourism park signals a new chapter for South Tripura. Further, blending natural beauty with responsible tourism, the project not only enhances the region’s economic potential but also reinforces the state’s commitment to green growth. If implemented effectively, Ludhua could soon become the jewel of Tripura’s eco-tourism landscape.
