Manipur’s law enforcement agencies have intensified their operations in the Kangpokpi district. Recent drives have led to the destruction of significant areas of poppy plantations, underscoring the state’s commitment to eradicating the drug menace.

Recent Operations in Kangpokpi

In a notable operation, a combined team of over 150 personnel from the Manipur Police, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Forest Department, and district administration conducted a poppy destruction drive in the hill range of Lhungjang village under Saikul Police Station in Kangpokpi district. Based on intelligence inputs, the team discovered and destroyed approximately 35 acres of illegal poppy cultivation. The operation lasted a full day, during which the poppy plants, nearing harvest, were uprooted and razed. While no arrests were made on-site, an FIR has been registered, and investigations are underway to identify and prosecute the cultivators.

In a separate operation, security forces destroyed 14 acres of illegal poppy plantations near Thonglang Akutpa village in the same district. This operation involved a combined team of Kangpokpi district police and 90 CRPF personnel. An FIR was filed, and further investigations are ongoing to apprehend those responsible for the illicit cultivation.

Government’s Stance and Actions

Chief Minister N. Biren Singh has been vocal in his appreciation for the efforts of the security forces. He lauded the combined teams for their successful operations and emphasized the government’s unwavering commitment to the “War on Drugs” campaign. The Chief Minister also acknowledged the exceptional contributions of the CRPF in these operations, highlighting the collaborative approach between state and central agencies in tackling the issue.

Broader Impact and Environmental Concerns

The Manipur Remote Sensing Applications Centre (MARSAC) has reported that, between 2017 and 2024, law enforcement agencies destroyed approximately 19,135.60 acres of illegal poppy cultivation across 12 districts of the state. Kangpokpi district accounted for the highest area of destruction, with 4,454.4 acres cleared, followed by Ukhrul and Churachandpur districts.

The widespread cultivation of poppy has led to significant deforestation, resulting in adverse environmental impacts such as soil erosion, loss of biodiversity, and alterations to the local climate. The government’s intensified efforts aim not only to curb the drug trade but also to address these environmental concerns.

Challenges and the Way Forward

Despite the successes, challenges remain. The vast and often inaccessible terrains of Manipur’s hill districts make monitoring and enforcement difficult. Additionally, the socio-economic factors driving locals towards poppy cultivation need to be addressed. The government recognizes that sustainable solutions require a multi-faceted approach, including providing alternative livelihoods, enhancing awareness programs, and strengthening community engagement.

The recent operations in Kangpokpi are a testament to Manipur’s resolute stance against illegal poppy cultivation. Through continued collaboration between state and central agencies, and with the support of local communities, the government aims to eradicate illicit poppy cultivation and promote sustainable development in the region.
