The Meghalaya Police has firmly denied the presence of Pakistani nationals in East Khasi Hills district, clarifying that no such individuals have been detected or reported in the region. The statement comes in response to unverified claims that alleged foreign infiltration in the state, sparking unnecessary public concern.

According to the East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police (SP), recent checks and verifications conducted by law enforcement agencies have found no evidence to support the claims. The police urged the public to avoid spreading misinformation and rely only on official channels for verified updates.

No Security Threat in East Khasi Hills, Say Authorities

“The reports circulating about the presence of Pakistani nationals in East Khasi Hills are completely baseless and unverified,” said SP Rituraj Ravi in an official press briefing. “We have conducted a thorough verification in coordination with other security and intelligence agencies. There is no threat to public safety, and the situation is absolutely normal.”

SP Ravi further warned that spreading false information on social media can lead to public panic and communal tension, which could be punishable under the law. He emphasized that any suspicious activity should be immediately reported to the police instead of being sensationalized online.

Background of the Rumour

The confusion reportedly began when a few social media users claimed that individuals of “foreign origin” were seen in parts of the East Khasi Hills, particularly near Shillong and adjoining areas. Some posts even falsely alleged that these individuals were “Pakistanis attempting to infiltrate.”

However, no official reports, immigration alerts, or border security notifications have corroborated these allegations. The Meghalaya Police, along with central agencies, confirmed that all residents in the area are accounted for and no foreign infiltration has occurred.

Meghalaya’s Strategic Importance and Vigilance

Located in India’s sensitive Northeast region, Meghalaya shares an international border with Bangladesh, making border security a high priority for state and central authorities. However, the state does not share any border with Pakistan, making infiltration by Pakistani nationals into East Khasi Hills highly improbable.

The Meghalaya Police, in coordination with the Border Security Force (BSF) and Intelligence Bureau (IB), regularly monitors border activity and internal migration patterns. Authorities have assured that all checkpoints and sensitive areas are under constant surveillance, and any foreign national entering the region without documentation would be immediately detected.

Police Appeal for Responsible Use of Social Media

Reiterating their stance, the East Khasi Hills police appealed to the public to act responsibly online. “The circulation of fake news and rumours not only misguides people but also puts unnecessary pressure on law enforcement agencies,” said a senior police officer.

Police have asked netizens to refrain from sharing unverified content and report any suspicious activity directly through official communication channels. Anyone found intentionally spreading communal or anti-national misinformation could face action under the Information Technology Act and relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Public Cooperation Appreciated

The police also acknowledged the support of local communities and village headmen who cooperated in providing accurate data during the verification drive. Residents of East Khasi Hills, known for their peaceful and community-driven lifestyle, played an active role in confirming that no foreign individuals were residing illegally in their areas.

One local resident from Mawkhar area said, “We haven’t seen any unknown or suspicious person in our locality. These rumours only create unnecessary fear. Our community is always watchful and cooperative with the police.”

The Meghalaya Police’s firm clarification has put an end to rumours regarding the alleged presence of Pakistani nationals in East Khasi Hills. With no evidence found, authorities are now focusing on preventing further spread of misinformation and maintaining peace and public confidence in the region.

Meghalaya continues to remain safe and secure, thanks to proactive policing, community vigilance, and prompt action against false narratives.
