New Study Reveals Underactivity in Nervous System Areas of Long COVID Patients with Fatigue

A groundbreaking research conducted at Newcastle University in the UK has shed light on the underlying causes of fatigue in long COVID patients. The study, published in the journal Brain Communications, identified three key areas in the nervous system that exhibit underactivity in individuals experiencing post-COVID fatigue.

The first area of concern is specific cortical circuits in the brain. The research found that these circuits, responsible for various cognitive functions, displayed slower reactions in long COVID patients with fatigue compared to those without. This suggests that the fatigue experienced by these individuals may be linked to impaired brain activity.

The second area affected is the autonomic nervous system, which regulates unconscious body processes such as blood pressure and breathing rate. An imbalance in this system was observed in long COVID patients, potentially impacting multiple body functions. It highlights the far-reaching effects of the disease beyond the initial respiratory symptoms.

The third area of focus is muscle abnormalities. The study revealed that muscle fibers in individuals with post-COVID fatigue became more easily fatigued following exercise compared to those without fatigue. This finding suggests that there may be specific physiological changes occurring in the muscles of long COVID patients that contribute to their persistent fatigue.

To reach these conclusions, the researchers conducted a battery of behavioral and neurophysiological tests on a group of 37 volunteers experiencing post-COVID fatigue. The results were then compared to a control group of 52 individuals without fatigue, matched for age and sex. The tests included assessments such as startle reaction time, electrocardiogram, and transcranial magnetic stimulation, providing a comprehensive evaluation of the participants’ nervous system functioning.

The significance of this research lies in its ability to provide objective evidence of the measurable nature of fatigue in long COVID. By identifying specific abnormalities in the nervous system through these tests, medical professionals can gain a better understanding of how these changes contribute to the persistent fatigue experienced by patients.
