Shammi had proposed Neela over the phone
In the interview given to E-Times, Neela Devi has made many interesting revelations including Shammi and her marriage to Kapoor family’s wedding. On 27 June 1969, Shammi had a secret wedding with Neela Devi. Remembering her old days, Neela Devi told that in those days- “In those days I used to roam with Ritu Nanda. At that time, Raj Kapoor ji and Krishna ji introduced me to Shammi ji.
Not only this, he had also advised Shammi ji to marry me. It was just a few days since Ritu Nanda got married and suddenly, one night Shammi ji called. My sister hung up on him saying it was too late to call at that time, but he called again and said he wanted to talk to me.
Talked on the phone for five hours
She further told that that night Shammi ji talked on the phone for about 4 to 5 hours and proposed for marriage. He told me everything about his school, girlfriend, marriage to Geeta Bali, kids on that call. He said that he would come home the next day and take me to Banganga and we would get married there. ‘I told him, ‘We don’t have that here.’
I told him that Shammi ji our parents should be present in this marriage. Shammi ji said that he agrees and we should get married at his house only. After this there was a conversation between both the families and we got married on 27 June 1969, the next day after their call.
People started talking about divorce
During this, she also told that after this marriage, many people felt that their marriage would last only for two months and then they would get divorced. She said, “Seeing the kind of image Shammi Kapoor had built, people used to say that this marriage would not last more than two months. This was also because I was very simple.
Neela further says- “I used to put a palla on my head, used to wear a saree. In such a situation, people started feeling that this marriage would not last long. After all our marriage lasted for 44 years. Let me tell you, on 14 August 2011, Shammi Kapoor died at the age of 79.
