Tanya Maniktala, the breakout star of Netflix’s critically-acclaimed series “A Suitable Boy,” has revealed that director Mira Nair advised her to be selective about the roles she chooses post the show’s success. In an interview with PTI, the Delhi-born actor said that working with Nair on the 2020 BBC series, based on Vikram Seth’s novel of the same name, was an “enriching” experience.
According to Maniktala, Nair warned her that a lot of offers would come her way after the success of “A Suitable Boy” but she should be careful and selective about the roles she takes up. The actor further said that she was happy with the choices she has made so far and that her passion for acting has only grown since the show’s release.
Maniktala’s latest release is another Netflix series titled “Tooth Pari: When Love Bites.” The show is a romantic fantasy thriller that follows the love story of a vampire named Rumi (Maniktala) and a dentist named Roy (Shantanu Maheshwari). The actor said that she was attracted to the role as she had never seen anything like a vampire falling in love with a dentist before. She added that the story is layered with other emotions, making it a twisted love story.
In the Kolkata-set series, created and directed by Pratim Dasgupta, Maniktala plays Rumi, a character she describes as “cool and aggressive.” She said that she wanted to tap into all these emotions and loved reading the story, but was not sure if it was going to be everybody’s cup of tea, so it was a big risk.
The actor’s next project is Santosh Sivan’s Hindi film “Mumbaikar,” in which she will make her debut alongside Vijay Sethupathi and Vikrant Massey. The team has completed the shoot, and Maniktala said that the makers will soon announce the release date.
Overall, Tanya Maniktala seems to be making bold and thoughtful choices in her acting career, following the advice of her mentor, Mira Nair. With “A Suitable Boy” and “Tooth Pari” under her belt, and her upcoming debut in “Mumbaikar,” it will be exciting to see what roles she takes on in the future.
