The Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Tripura has launched a statewide training programme for booth-level officers (BLOs) and supervisors. The initiative aims to ensure accurate and error-free electoral rolls. It also intends to strengthen grassroots-level election management as part of preparations for upcoming electoral activities.
The training began on Friday and is being held across all districts under the supervision of district election officers and returning officers. Further, the move comes amid growing emphasis on maintaining transparency and credibility in electoral processes.
Strengthening Electoral Foundations
Tripura CEO Puneet Agarwal said the training drive is crucial for building a robust and clean electoral roll. “Our goal is to ensure that every eligible voter is included and no ineligible entry is present. Moreover, Booth-level officers are the backbone of the election machinery,” he said while launching the drive.
He also stressed the importance of timely and accurate data entry and verification. The CEO added that supervisors must provide on-ground support to BLOs to ensure the smooth conduct of door-to-door verification work.
Ensuring Accuracy on the Ground
Officials explained that the training covers several key aspects. These include identifying eligible voters, removing duplicate or deceased names, and verifying voter documents. Officers are also being trained in digital tools used for electoral roll management.
One of the key areas of focus is the use of the Garuda app, which enables faster and more accurate voter data collection. Supervisors have been asked to closely monitor BLO activities and submit regular progress reports.
Women BLOs Lead from the Front
A notable feature of this year’s drive is the large participation of women booth-level officers. In many districts, women BLOs are leading the charge. Also, going door to door with voter lists and verifying details with families.
Tripura election officials say the increasing involvement of women in election duties enhances public trust and participation, especially in rural areas.
Call for Public Cooperation
The Election Department has urged citizens to cooperate with BLOs during the verification process. Voters have been advised to keep identification and address proof ready. However, those who have shifted residence or changed names must inform BLOs promptly.
In a public appeal, CEO Puneet Agarwal said, “This process ensures that every voice counts. We request citizens to verify their entries and support BLOs to help maintain a clean and fair electoral roll.”
Posters, social media campaigns, and local announcements are also being used to raise awareness among voters.
Push for Error-Free Rolls Before Next Election
With Tripura expected to head into crucial electoral phases in the coming months, the timing of this training becomes significant. In addition, officials hope that the new training will reduce the scope of human error in electoral records.
District collectors and sub-divisional magistrates have been assigned special responsibility for monitoring training efficiency. Besides, any irregularities or delays in voter roll work will be dealt with strictly, as per the CEO’s directives.
Looking Ahead
This initiative aligns with the Election Commission of India’s broader efforts to modernize electoral management and boost voter confidence. Afterall, training feedback will be collected regularly, and refresher sessions will be arranged where necessary.
As Tripura prepares for democratic exercises ahead, this BLO and supervisor training programme stands as a step forward in strengthening the foundation of free and fair elections.
