Tripura BJP protest Rabindranath Tagore home attack

The Tripura unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday staged massive protests near integrated check posts (ICPs) and land customs stations along the Indo-Bangladesh border. The protests were organized to condemn the recent attack and ransacking of Kabiguru Rabindranath Tagore’s ancestral home in Bangladesh’s Kushtia district.

Tripura shares an 856-km-long international border with Bangladesh. The proximity and cultural ties between the two regions add weight to the BJP’s demonstration.

Outrage Over Desecration of Cultural Heritage

The Tripura BJP accused miscreants of deliberately targeting a symbol of shared heritage and Indo-Bangla cultural harmony. Party leaders said the attack on Tagore’s residence is not just a local issue but a direct insult to the legacy of a Nobel laureate and global icon.

“Tagore belongs to the world, not to one country. This act is a strike on culture, literature, and harmony. We demand that the Bangladesh government take swift action and arrest those responsible,” said Tripura BJP president Rajib Bhattacharjee during the protest at Akhaura ICP in Agartala.

Protests Held Across Border Points

Demonstrations were held at key ICPs including Srimantapur, Muhurighat, and Khowai-Moniara. Party workers gathered with placards, shouting slogans against religious extremism and cultural intolerance. They urged the Indian government to engage diplomatically and press Bangladesh for justice.

According to BJP sources, over 3,000 workers participated in the protests. Security was tightened at all border points to ensure peaceful demonstrations.

“We are not against the people of Bangladesh. But we condemn the growing radicalism that threatens the heritage of icons like Rabindranath Tagore,” said BJP MLA Pranajit Singha Roy at a rally in Sabroom.

A Call for Diplomatic Pressure

Tripura BJP leaders also submitted memorandums to central authorities demanding strong diplomatic intervention. They urged the Ministry of External Affairs to raise the matter with Dhaka and ensure protection of all Indian-linked heritage sites in Bangladesh.

Cultural organizations in Tripura also joined the call for international pressure. The Rabindra Parishad, based in Agartala, said the incident hurts the sentiments of millions across India and Bangladesh.

Background: Attack on Tagore’s Ancestral Home

Rabindranath Tagore’s ancestral home in Bangladesh’s Kushtia district was reportedly ransacked by unidentified assailants last week. Several artifacts were damaged and graffiti was scribbled on the walls.

The incident drew strong criticism from intellectuals and cultural activists in both countries. Bangladeshi authorities have launched an investigation, but no arrests had been made at the time of writing.

India and Bangladesh have shared long-standing cultural bonds, especially over literary figures like Tagore, who penned the national anthems of both nations — Jana Gana Mana for India and Amar Shonar Bangla for Bangladesh.

A Border State Reacts

Tripura’s deep emotional and cultural links with Bangladesh have made the state particularly sensitive to such incidents. Rabindra Jayanti, the birth anniversary of Tagore, is celebrated with grandeur in Agartala and nearby towns.

“We cannot remain silent when cultural heritage is attacked. Our protests will continue until justice is delivered,” said a protester in Belonia near the southern border.

Strong Message From the Northeast On Rabindranath Tagore Home Attack

This protest marks a rare cross-border cultural solidarity movement led by a state political unit. The BJP’s stand reflects growing concerns in the northeastern region over intolerance and attacks on shared legacies.
