Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha has called on the Centre to expedite the repair of damaged India-Bangladesh border fencing in the state. The demand was raised during a BJP event commemorating 11 years of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership.
Speaking at the gathering, CM Saha emphasized that gaps in the fencing pose a serious risk to national security. “We urge the Central Government to immediately address the damaged stretches along the Indo-Bangla border. It is essential to plug these gaps to prevent illegal infiltration and smuggling,” he said.
Damaged India-Bangladesh border Fencing a Growing Concern
Tripura shares an 856-km-long international border with Bangladesh, and many stretches are vulnerable due to years of wear and natural damage. Local authorities have repeatedly reported infiltration, cattle smuggling, and narcotics trade through broken fences and unfenced areas.
“The fencing in several sectors, especially in Sepahijala, Unakoti, and Dhalai districts, needs urgent repair. Border Security Force (BSF) has done commendable work, but infrastructure support is vital,” CM Saha said.
He also appealed to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to sanction fresh funds for the completion of pending fencing works and installation of smart surveillance tools.
Push for Border Vigilance and Technological Aid
The Chief Minister proposed additional BSF outposts and installation of high-resolution night vision cameras in sensitive zones. “Strengthening our borders with modern tools and coordinated vigilance is the need of the hour,” he said.
BSF sources revealed that about 32 km of fencing remains incomplete due to land acquisition hurdles and terrain-related challenges. CM Saha also called for cooperative engagement between the Centre and state agencies to resolve these issues.
Saha Applauds PM Modi’s 11-Year Governance
The event also celebrated the 11th anniversary of Narendra Modi’s tenure as Prime Minister. CM Saha lauded Modi’s vision for inclusive growth and national development.
“This is a golden era for India. PM Modi’s leadership has brought infrastructure growth, digital progress, and improved ease of living across the country,” he said.
He also praised the Centre’s consistent focus on the Northeast. “No Prime Minister has given the Northeast such priority. Roads, railways, air connectivity, healthcare—everything has seen transformation,” Saha remarked.
An e-book released at the event listed policy milestones across 14 key sectors including digital governance, education, healthcare, and defense. The document highlights how flagship schemes like Ayushman Bharat, PMGSY, and Digital India have reshaped grassroots governance.
Tripura-Bangladesh Relations: A Cross-Border Perspective
The India-Bangladesh border is not just a security issue—it also involves trade and people-to-people ties. CM Saha stressed that peace on the border is crucial for fostering bilateral trust.
“Illegal crossings disrupt trade, tourism, and cultural exchange. We must ensure our borders are safe but also open to lawful economic interaction,” he said.
Tripura has benefited from integrated check posts at Akhaura and other locations, boosting exports and cultural outreach. However, security gaps remain a concern for both nations.

Call to Action for the Centre
Concluding his speech, CM Saha reiterated his government’s commitment to cooperating with central agencies. “We are ready to facilitate all support—be it land, manpower, or logistics. But the fencing must be restored before monsoon peaks,” he warned.
With the Northeast gaining prominence in national policy, Tripura hopes the Centre will act swiftly. Citizens and local leaders are also urging quick action to secure lives and livelihoods in border regions.
