To modernize energy governance and address electricity theft, the Tripura government has announced the use of drones to detect power theft and illegal hooklines across the state. The initiative, unveiled by Tripura Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath. Aims to improve surveillance, reduce distribution losses, and ensure consistent power supply, especially in rural and forested regions.

The minister made the announcement during a press briefing held at the Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL) headquarters, highlighting the administration’s broader strategy to increase solar power generation and upgrade infrastructure to meet growing demand.

Drones to Monitor Power Lines and Curb Theft

According to Nath, the drone surveillance program has already begun in select subdivisions where power theft through illegal hooklines has been rampant. These drones are equipped with high-resolution cameras and GPS tracking systems that can identify unauthorized connections from power lines and help locate tampered meters.

“Earlier, teams had to rely on manual inspections, which were not only time-consuming but also ineffective in remote areas. Now with drone technology, we can catch violators faster and improve overall grid efficiency,” Nath said.

The surveillance footage is transmitted in real-time to regional control rooms, allowing prompt disconnection and legal action against offenders. He added that recovered losses through drone monitoring have already begun to reflect in billing data.

New Substation, PM Scheme Boost Supply

Alongside enforcement measures, the state has also accelerated efforts to upgrade its power infrastructure. A new 132 kV power substation will be constructed at Jirania, funded by the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS) under the Ministry of Power, Government of India.

This substation will enhance electricity quality and reduce frequent outages in western Tripura. The RDSS scheme also focuses on prepaid smart meters, capacity building, and strengthening rural electrification.

“Improving infrastructure goes hand in hand with surveillance and renewable adoption. We are committed to ensuring stable and equitable access to electricity,” said the minister.

Solar Energy & Drones Gains Momentum in Tripura

Tripura is also witnessing a sharp rise in household-level solar installations under the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, which offers subsidies for rooftop solar units.

More than 15,000 applications have been received since the scheme’s launch, and the number is growing rapidly, especially in Agartala, Udaipur, and Dharmanagar.

“We want people to become both consumers and producers of energy. Rooftop solar not only reduces household bills but also strengthens our state’s green credentials,” Nath explained.

The state’s goal is to generate over 250 MW of solar energy by 2027. In addition, community-based solar plants are being considered for tribal and hilly regions with limited grid access.

Public Participation and Awareness

To make these initiatives successful, the Power Department has launched an awareness campaign through local media, social platforms, and door-to-door outreach in theft-prone zones. The campaign encourages consumers to report illegal activities and opt for clean energy solutions.

Consumers who voluntarily regularize illegal connections before detection will receive amnesty benefits and streamlined billing processes.

A Model for Other Northeastern States

Tripura’s integrated approach—combining surveillance tech, solar energy promotion. And infrastructure development—is emerging as a model for other northeastern states battling similar challenges.

The Power Minister said, “We hope Tripura sets an example for balancing enforcement with incentives and building a sustainable future for our people.”

What Lies Ahead?

Tripura plans to expand drone usage to monitor sub-transmission networks and transformer points, especially during peak load seasons. The Energy Department will review the results quarterly and scale operations as needed.
