The Indian Army recently commissioned Rekha Singh, wife of Naik Deepak Singh, as a Lieutenant in the force. Naik Deepak Singh was martyred in the Galwan Valley clashes with Chinese troops in 2020. Rekha Singh has been posted to a frontline base along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh.

Lt. Singh completed her one-year training at the Officers Training Academy (OTA) in Chennai. Naik Singh, who was from the 16th Battalion of Bihar Regiment, was posthumously awarded the Vir Chakra in 2021 for his supreme sacrifice during the Galwan Valley clashes.

The Indian Army tweeted about the commissioning of Lt. Singh, stating, “Woman Cadet Rekha Singh, wife of Late Naik(Nursing Assistant) Deepak Singh, #VirChakra(Posthumous) got commissioned into #IndianArmy after completing her training from #OTA #Chennai.” This move by the Indian Army not only honours the sacrifice of Naik Deepak Singh but also recognises the capability and dedication of his wife, Lt. Rekha Singh.

The Indian Army has been actively encouraging women to join its ranks in recent years. In 2019, the Indian Army announced that it would induct women into the Military Police for the first time. This was a significant step towards greater gender equality in the Indian Armed Forces. The Army has also been recruiting women officers in various other branches, including the Judge Advocate General (JAG) and the Army Education Corps (AEC).

The induction of Lt. Singh into the Indian Army is a positive step towards achieving greater gender diversity in the force. It also sends a strong message to the nation about the Army’s commitment to honouring its brave soldiers and their families.

Lt. Singh’s posting to a frontline base in eastern Ladakh is also significant, as it underscores the Army’s resolve to defend India’s borders and safeguard its territorial integrity. The situation along the LAC has been tense since the Galwan Valley clashes, and the presence of dedicated soldiers like Lt. Singh is critical for the security of the region.

In conclusion, the commissioning of Rekha Singh as a Lieutenant in the Indian Army is a testament to her courage and dedication, and it also highlights the Army’s commitment to gender equality and inclusivity. It is a fitting tribute to the memory of Naik Deepak Singh and a reminder to the nation of the sacrifices made by our brave soldiers.
