Kongan relief efforts received a significant boost on August 23 as the Purvanchal Bhikkhu Sangha distributed essential relief materials among more than 170 households affected by a landslide at Kongan village in Nagaland’s Mon district. The initiative was supported by Swiss Buddhist devotee Monica Thaddey and aimed at helping families dealing with the continuing impact of the natural disaster.
The landslide struck Kongan on July 24 and blocked roads in the area, creating difficulties for residents and affecting access to essential supplies. The latest relief distribution has provided immediate assistance to affected families while also drawing attention to the continuing needs of communities facing the impact of landslides and heavy monsoon conditions in the Northeast.
Kongan relief efforts reach more than 170 households
The Purvanchal Bhikkhu Sangha, a Buddhist monks’ organisation from Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, travelled to Kongan to distribute essential commodities among families affected by the landslide.
According to the report, more than 170 households received assistance during the relief programme. The distribution was supported by Monica Thaddey, a Swiss Buddhist devotee associated with Mahabodhi-related humanitarian and Buddhist activities. The Mahabodhi Metta Foundation lists Thaddey as its president and is based in Meggen, Switzerland.
The assistance comes at a critical time for affected residents, particularly as disruptions caused by landslides can make access to food and other necessities more difficult in remote areas.
Relief follows earlier work in Assam
The Kongan relief efforts were part of a wider humanitarian initiative by the Purvanchal Bhikkhu Sangha. Before reaching Mon district, members of the organisation had visited flood-affected villages in Assam’s Sivasagar and Charaideo districts to distribute relief materials.
The organisation’s General Secretary, Nyanaloka Bhikkhu, said people should come forward to support communities affected by floods and landslides in Assam and Nagaland. He stressed the importance of humanitarian assistance, saying that humanity was greater than religion.
The message reflects the broader role that community and faith-based organisations can play during natural disasters, particularly when affected families require immediate support beyond formal relief mechanisms.
Support for Kongan residents after landslide
Kongan is located in Nagaland’s Mon district and falls under the Wakching area. The village is situated around 18 kilometres from Naginimora and about 60 kilometres from Mon town, according to available village data.
The July landslide caused road blockages in the area, adding to the difficulties faced by residents. In remote and hilly parts of Nagaland, road connectivity is particularly important because it affects the movement of people, food, medical supplies and other essential commodities.
Against this backdrop, the Kongan relief efforts have provided practical assistance to households dealing with the aftermath of the landslide.
A senior member of the Konyak Naga community expressed gratitude for the assistance and said the support would be remembered by the affected community. The response underlined the importance of outside assistance when local communities face sudden disruptions caused by natural disasters.
Buddhist humanitarian support
Monica Thaddey’s support adds an international dimension to the Kongan relief efforts. Her association with Buddhist organisations has included support for Buddhist and humanitarian activities in India and abroad.
The Mahabodhi Society’s records also identify Monica Thaddey as a supporter of Buddhist initiatives in India. Its annual report records contributions connected with several Buddhist centres and activities.
Such support demonstrates how Buddhist networks can contribute to humanitarian responses while working with local organisations that have access to communities affected by emergencies.
The Kongan relief efforts also highlight the importance of coordinated assistance during the monsoon season, when landslides and floods can disrupt communities across the Northeast. Timely distribution of essential commodities can help families manage immediate shortages while damaged roads and infrastructure are gradually restored.
For residents of Kongan, the assistance delivered on August 23 offers practical support following the July 24 landslide. It also highlights the value of cooperation between local communities, voluntary organisations and supporters from outside the region.
The Kongan relief efforts have therefore emerged as an example of community-focused humanitarian action following a natural disaster. As the affected families continue to recover, sustained attention to road connectivity, essential supplies and local needs will remain important.
The relief initiative also sends a broader message about solidarity during difficult times. Support from Monica Thaddey and the Purvanchal Bhikkhu Sangha has helped bring essential commodities to affected households while strengthening cooperation between Buddhist humanitarian networks and the Konyak Naga community.
