Ariha Pangambam has created a landmark moment for Indian gymnastics by becoming the first Indian athlete to win a gold medal in the senior women’s individual event at the Aerobic Gymnastics Asian Championships. The Manipur gymnast produced a winning performance in the final of the 2026 continental championship in the Philippines, underlining India’s growing presence in aerobic gymnastics.
Ariha Pangambam makes history in the Philippines
Ariha Pangambam secured the gold medal with a score of 19.100 points in the senior women’s individual final. Her performance included 8.650 points for artistry, 7.600 for execution and 2.850 for difficulty, giving her the top overall score and India’s first-ever senior women’s individual gold at the Asian Championships.
The achievement came at the 10th Senior Aerobic Gymnastics Asian Championships, which were held in Tagaytay City, Philippines, from August 5 to 7. The event brought together leading athletes from across Asia and provided a major continental platform for Indian gymnasts.
Gymnastics Federation of India president Sudhir Mital praised the performance and credited the athlete and her coach for the breakthrough result. He described the achievement as a major success for the Indian team.
A breakthrough Asian title for India
The gold medal represents a significant step for Indian aerobic gymnastics. Before this result, Indian athletes had reached the later stages of the senior women’s individual competition but had not won the Asian title.
The previous edition in Hanoi in 2024 saw Japan’s Mao Kishibe win the senior women’s individual gold, while Ariha Pangambam finished fifth with a score of 18.125. Her qualification score that year was 18.200.
The latest victory therefore marks a substantial improvement for the Manipur gymnast on the continental stage. It also reflects the progress she has made after years of competing at major national, Asian and international events.
Ariha Pangambam’s steady rise
The new Asian champion has been a prominent name in Indian aerobic gymnastics for several years. Born in Imphal, Manipur, in 2004, she competes in the women’s individual category and has represented India at multiple international competitions.
Her earlier results show a consistent upward trajectory. At the 2022 Asian Championships in Pattaya, Thailand, she finished fourth in the senior women’s individual event with a score of 18.000. She also competed at the 2022 World Championships in Guimarães, Portugal, where she placed 26th in qualification.
In 2023, she won the women’s individual aerobic gymnastics event at the National Games, scoring 17.70. She also topped the individual women’s field at the 2022-23 national championship with 18.45 points.
Strong international experience behind the gold
The historic Asian title follows several years of international exposure. Ariha Pangambam represented India at the 2024 FIG Aerobic Gymnastics World Championships in Pesaro, Italy, and was the country’s lone woman competing in the individual event.
She was also selected for India’s senior women’s individual team at the 2025 Suzuki Aerobic Gymnastics World Cup in Tokyo. The competition featured athletes from several countries and gave Indian gymnasts another opportunity to compete against established international performers.
Her international experience has included previous Asian Championship appearances as well. In 2019, she finished third at the inaugural Aerobic Gymnastics Asian Cup in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, according to the All Manipur Gymnastics Association.
India’s strong presence at the Asian Championships
India entered the 2026 championships with one of the largest contingents. Organisers said the country had 50 entries, more than Vietnam’s 45 and the Philippines’ 43. The competition included individual men’s and women’s events, mixed pairs, trios, groups, aerobic dance and aerobic steps.
The championship was sanctioned by the World Gymnastics and Asian Gymnastics Union and featured youth, junior and senior categories. More than 350 foreign delegates were expected for the four-day event, reflecting the scale of the continental competition.
For Manipur and Indian gymnastics, the result provides a major boost. Ariha Pangambam’s Asian title not only adds a historic gold medal to India’s record but also highlights the growing contribution of athletes from the Northeast to the country’s international sporting success.
The victory could serve as an important benchmark for India’s aerobic gymnastics programme as athletes prepare for future continental and global competitions. For the 22-year-old from Manipur, the landmark gold is the biggest achievement yet in a career built through steady performances, international experience and continued improvement.
