Mizoram Asian Games reward has recognised the historic achievement of women’s hockey players Lalremsiami and Lalthantluangi, with the state government announcing Rs 25 lakh each for their contribution to India’s gold medal-winning campaign at the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan. The announcement was made by Chief Minister Lalduhoma on October 2.
The two players were part of the Indian women’s hockey team that defeated defending champions China 1-0 in the final. The victory ended India’s 44-year wait for the Asian Games women’s hockey gold, with the previous title coming in 1982.
Mizoram Asian Games reward for two hockey stars
Under the existing Mizoram Sports Incentives Cash Award Scheme, Lalremsiami and Lalthantluangi will each receive Rs 25 lakh. The state government said the award recognises their contribution to the national team’s gold medal success.
Lalduhoma congratulated the Indian team and specifically praised Lalremsiami, an Arjuna Award recipient, for her role in the campaign. He also extended his best wishes to both players and the Indian women’s hockey team for their future competitions.
The announcement carries particular significance for Mizoram because the two players have become the first sportspersons from the state to win gold at the Asian Games, according to reports quoting the chief minister.
Lalremsiami scores in decisive final
Lalremsiami played a key role in the final against China, scoring the only goal of the match as India secured the title. Her goal helped India complete a campaign that restored the women’s hockey team to the top of the Asian Games podium after more than four decades.
Lalthantluangi was also part of the squad that held its ground against China to secure the narrow victory. Their presence in the gold-medal-winning team has added to Mizoram’s growing contribution to Indian hockey.
For Lalremsiami, the Asian Games triumph adds another major achievement to an established international career. Her recognition with the Arjuna Award had already marked her standing in Indian sport, while the gold in Japan now gives her a historic Asian Games title.
India ends 44-year Asian Games wait
India’s 1-0 victory over China was significant beyond the individual achievements of the Mizoram players. The result brought the women’s hockey gold medal back to India for the first time since the 1982 Asian Games.
The triumph also secured India an automatic qualification berth for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. This gives the gold-medal campaign an additional significance as the Indian women’s team prepares for the next Olympic cycle.
Hockey India has separately announced cash rewards for the players and support staff. Each member of the women’s hockey team is set to receive Rs 11 lakh, while every member of the support staff will receive Rs 5.5 lakh following the historic victory.
State recognition follows national success
The Mizoram Asian Games reward comes as the state celebrates two athletes who have represented both Mizoram and India at the highest level. The Rs 25 lakh award for each player takes the state’s recognition of the achievement beyond congratulations and provides a formal financial incentive under its existing sports award framework.
The announcement also highlights the connection between Mizoram’s sporting talent and India’s success on international platforms. Lalremsiami and Lalthantluangi’s achievement places their Asian Games gold alongside the wider history of athletes from the northeastern state competing for India.
As the 2026 Asian Games continue in Japan, India’s women’s hockey title remains one of the country’s notable team achievements at the Games. For Mizoram, the success has a more specific milestone: two players from the state have helped India reclaim a title that had been absent for 44 years.
The Rs 25 lakh awards now formally recognise that contribution. Lalremsiami and Lalthantluangi’s achievement also gives Mizoram another prominent sporting moment, while India’s women’s hockey team moves forward with an Olympic qualification secured and a new Asian Games title in its record.
