The North East Karate Championship is set to return to Meghalaya after a gap of 30 years, marking a significant moment for martial arts and sports development in the state. The upcoming event is expected to bring together around 900 participants from across the northeastern region, creating a major platform for karate athletes to demonstrate their skills, discipline and competitive spirit.
The championship is expected to attract athletes, coaches, officials and supporters, placing Meghalaya in the spotlight as a host for a major regional sporting event. Its return after three decades also highlights the growing importance of martial arts in the Northeast, where sporting organisations continue to encourage young people to participate in structured competitions and pursue athletic development.
Shillong to Host Three-Day Regional Karate Tournament
The 5th Karate India Organisation (KIO) North East Zone Karate Championship 2026 will be held from October 22 to 24 at the Convocation Hall of North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) in Shillong. The event is being organised under the aegis of the Karate India Organisation and hosted by the All Meghalaya Karate-Do Association (AMKA), with support from the Meghalaya government’s Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs.
The tournament marks the return of a major zonal karate championship to Meghalaya after nearly three decades. Organisers are making extensive preparations to accommodate the participating athletes and officials and ensure the smooth conduct of the three-day programme.
Around 900 Participants Expected at the Championship
The North East Karate Championship is expected to bring together around 900 participants, including karatekas, coaches, referees and team officials. Reports indicate that approximately 20 international-level karate practitioners are also expected to compete, adding to the competitive significance of the event.
Athletes will compete in five categories: Sub-Junior, Cadet, Junior, Under-21 and Senior. The championship will feature both kata and kumite, two major disciplines of karate.
Kata involves performing a sequence of defensive and offensive techniques in a structured form, while kumite focuses on sparring between competitors under established rules. The inclusion of both disciplines will give participants opportunities to demonstrate technical ability, precision, speed, control and tactical awareness.
The event is expected to provide a valuable platform for emerging athletes to measure their abilities against competitors from other northeastern states.
Meghalaya to Field 296 Karatekas
Meghalaya will be represented by a contingent of 296 karatekas, comprising 152 male and 144 female athletes. Participants from six other northeastern states are also expected to travel to Shillong, while Mizoram is reported to be absent from the competition.
AMKA president Hunlang Lytan has expressed pride in the association’s opportunity to host the championship after such a long interval. The event is particularly important for local athletes, who will be able to compete before home supporters while testing themselves against experienced regional opponents.
The state contingent will receive support from a dedicated coaching and management team. Mingson Rymbai and Arjun Sewa will serve as head coaches, while Wandashisha Warjri and Ronald L Nonglait will take up assistant coaching responsibilities.
A team of managers and physiotherapist Sharailang Nongneng Shanpru will also support the athletes throughout the competition, helping ensure that they receive technical guidance, supervision and appropriate care.
Meghalaya’s karatekas will be aiming to build on their performance at the previous championship in Itanagar, Arunachal Pradesh, where the state secured 62 medals. The upcoming tournament will offer another opportunity to demonstrate the progress made by local athletes.
Referee and Coaches Seminar to Be Held on October 22
Alongside the sporting programme, the championship will include a referee and coaches seminar and examination on October 22. The programme is intended to support technical development and strengthen the knowledge of officials and coaches involved in karate.
According to organisers, 21 participants from Meghalaya will attend the programme, which will be conducted by Premjit Sen, chairman of the KIO Referee Commission. The matches themselves are scheduled for October 23 and 24.
The formal opening ceremony will take place on October 23, with Meghalaya Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Wailadmiki Shylla expected to inaugurate the championship. KIO president Bharat Sharma and Sports and Youth Affairs Director Alertson Nongbri are also expected to attend.
The programme will bring together athletes and technical officials, making it an opportunity to exchange experience and strengthen standards across the regional karate community.
Winners to Qualify for Inter-Zonal Championship
The North East Karate Championship will also serve as an important step towards higher-level competition. Successful participants will qualify for the KIO Inter-Zonal Karate Championship 2026, scheduled to take place in New Delhi on December 16 and 17.
Qualification for the next stage will give athletes an opportunity to compete against stronger opponents and gain further exposure. For younger karatekas, such tournaments can help build confidence, improve competitive experience and provide clearer goals for future training.
The event also comes as Meghalaya prepares to host the 39th National Games in 2027. Hosting a large regional championship is expected to contribute to the state’s sporting experience, strengthen organisational capacity and support the development of athletes and officials.
With hundreds of participants expected in Shillong, the championship represents an important occasion for Meghalaya’s martial arts community. The return of a major zonal event after 30 years offers local karatekas a chance to showcase their abilities, while the participation of athletes from across the Northeast is expected to strengthen regional sporting ties. The tournament could also help inspire more young people to take up karate and pursue opportunities at state, national and international levels.
