Tripura international cricket stadium gets major push as CM targets 2027 matches

Tripura international cricket stadium is moving closer to completion, with Chief Minister Manik Saha directing officials and contractors to speed up the remaining construction work at Narsingarh. The chief minister has also indicated that the state will approach the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to seek an international-level match at the venue next year.

CM Manik Saha inspects Tripura international cricket stadium

Chief Minister Manik Saha inspected the under-construction stadium at Narsingarh on August 16 and reviewed the progress of the project. During the visit, he instructed the authorities and agencies involved in construction to complete the pending work at the earliest.

The inspection reflects the state government’s push to make the venue operational without further delay. The project is expected to strengthen Tripura’s position on India’s cricket map and give local players and supporters access to a venue capable of hosting matches at a higher level.

Saha also said he would speak with the BCCI about organising an international-level cricket match in Tripura next year. The proposal would give the state an opportunity to host top-level cricket once the stadium is ready and meets the necessary standards.

Why the new stadium matters for Tripura cricket

The Tripura international cricket stadium is being developed at Narsingarh and is expected to become a major sporting facility for the state. Its completion could expand the range of cricket events that Tripura can host and create greater opportunities for players, officials and supporters.

For local cricketers, the availability of a modern venue could also contribute to a stronger domestic cricket environment. Tripura already participates in BCCI-organised domestic competitions, including the Vijay Hazare Trophy. The Tripura Cricket Association’s published 2026-27 fixtures show the state team scheduled to play its matches in Jharkhand, underlining the importance of quality home facilities.

A major stadium in Agartala could therefore help the state become a more prominent venue for domestic competitions as well as higher-profile matches.

BCCI decision will be key

The proposed international match will ultimately depend on the BCCI’s scheduling decisions, venue readiness and the stadium meeting required standards. The BCCI’s 2026-27 international home season includes 22 matches across 17 cities, demonstrating the scale of competition among venues seeking international fixtures.

The current schedule includes matches in Guwahati, including an India-West Indies ODI on September 30, 2026, and an Australia Test in February 2027.

Tripura’s proposed bid would therefore come as part of a wider national cricket calendar in which established venues already compete for international fixtures.

Focus on early completion

The immediate priority for the Tripura government is to finish the remaining construction work. Saha’s direction to expedite the project signals that the administration wants the stadium to be ready in time for the next stage of discussions with cricket authorities.

The venue’s readiness will be important not only for an international fixture but also for domestic matches and other major cricket events. A completed stadium could increase spectator interest, support sports-related businesses and encourage young players to pursue cricket more seriously.

For Tripura, the project also carries significance beyond the sport itself. Hosting nationally and internationally recognised cricket matches can bring visitors to the state and provide wider exposure to Agartala.

Tripura eyes cricket opportunity in 2027

The chief minister’s proposed approach to the BCCI places 2027 as an important target for Tripura. However, no international match has been officially confirmed for the state yet. The next steps will depend on the stadium’s completion, inspections and the BCCI’s future scheduling decisions.

If the project is completed on schedule and the venue receives the necessary approvals, an international match could mark a significant moment for Tripura cricket. It would also provide the state with an opportunity to showcase its growing sporting infrastructure to a national audience.

The government’s latest push has made timely completion the central focus. With the Narsingarh stadium nearing readiness and plans to engage the BCCI for a match next year, Tripura is seeking to turn a long-awaited cricket project into a major sporting opportunity.
