On the four-year anniversary of the BJP-led government in Assam, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma launched a landmark initiative — the city’s first piped gas supply for households in Guwahati. The historic launch took place on Saturday, marking a major step toward modernizing the city’s energy infrastructure and ensuring cleaner, safer, and more convenient cooking fuel access for thousands of families.

A Gift to Guwahati on a Milestone Day

In a symbolic move that coincided with the completion of four successful years of the current administration, the inauguration of the piped gas connection reflects the Assam government’s commitment to sustainable urban development. Addressing a gathering during the event, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma emphasized that this new facility is part of the government’s larger vision to bring ease of living and infrastructural advancement to the people of Assam.

“This initiative not only provides a hassle-free fuel solution but also reflects our determination to make Guwahati a smart, environment-friendly city. Our government is committed to transforming public utilities and offering better services,” said Sarma during the inauguration.

What the Piped Gas Supply Means for Residents

The newly launched piped gas network will initially benefit households in specific areas of Guwahati, including key residential zones. It eliminates the dependence on traditional LPG cylinders, offering residents an uninterrupted, cost-effective, and eco-friendly alternative for cooking fuel. Consumers will no longer need to worry about cylinder booking, storage, or delivery delays.

Apart from convenience, piped natural gas (PNG) is safer, as it reduces the risk of accidents from leakage during cylinder transport. It also burns more cleanly, making it better for indoor air quality and the environment.

Project Implementation and Partnerships

The project is being implemented by Purba Bharati Gas Pvt Ltd (PBGPL), a joint venture between Assam Gas Company Ltd (AGCL), Oil India Ltd (OIL), and GAIL Gas Ltd. The company has taken on the responsibility of establishing the city gas distribution network in Guwahati and neighboring regions under the government’s larger One Nation, One Gas Grid vision.

Phase-wise expansion of the pipeline will bring more households under the network, eventually covering not just urban but also semi-urban areas of Assam. According to company officials, thousands of connections are projected to be installed within the next year, in sync with the government’s clean energy mission.

Boost to State’s Clean Energy Drive

This piped gas project is aligned with India’s national energy strategy of increasing the share of natural gas in the energy mix to 15% by 2030. For Assam, which is rich in natural gas reserves, projects like these also signify better resource utilization. The Assam gas connection project will help reduce carbon emissions and reliance on fossil fuels, contributing to India’s climate goals.

Moreover, the government has plans to introduce piped gas connections in other major cities of the state, including Dibrugarh, Jorhat, and Silchar, in the near future.

Political and Public Reactions

The launch of the piped gas supply in Guwahati was met with positive responses from both citizens and political observers. Many viewed it as a reflection of the BJP government in Assam’s commitment to developmental governance. Social media platforms were abuzz with praise for Sarma’s proactive leadership and long-term vision.

With this launch, Sarma not only celebrated the achievements of his government over the past four years but also laid the foundation for the next phase of Assam’s urban transformation.

The introduction of Guwahati’s first piped gas supply on the four-year anniversary of the BJP-led government under Himanta Biswa Sarma marks a turning point in Assam’s urban utility infrastructure. As the city takes its first steps toward adopting cleaner and smarter energy solutions, this development is bound to enhance public convenience, safety, and environmental responsibility. It’s a strong signal that Assam is ready to embrace the future, powered by innovation and vision.
