Manipur marked the grand finale of its 76th Van Mahotsav with vibrant celebrations led by Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla. The event underlined the importance of environmental conservation and sustainable living.
Held on Sunday, the programme at Raj Bhavan drew government officials, environmentalists, school children, and citizens united by a single goal — to make Manipur greener.
Governor Bhalla Champions Green Mission
Governor Bhalla stressed that Manipur Van Mahotsav is not merely a symbolic event but a call for collective action.
“Planting trees is planting hope for the future,” he said. “Let us all pledge to protect our environment for the coming generations.”
The Governor planted saplings alongside children, urging citizens to contribute actively to the fight against climate change.
‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam 2.0’ Launched
A major highlight of the event was the launch of the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam 2.0’ campaign.
This initiative encourages every individual to plant at least one tree in honour of their mother. The first phase last year saw over one lakh saplings planted statewide.
Governor Bhalla declared, “This is a tribute to mothers and Mother Earth alike. Let us surpass last year’s numbers and green Manipur together.”
Students Join the Green Crusade
Hundreds of students participated, chanting slogans and performing skits on the benefits of trees and forest conservation.
Class VI student N. Priya said, “I feel proud to plant trees today. I will take care of my sapling.”
The Education Department confirmed plans to integrate environmental awareness into school activities under the Van Mahotsav spirit.
Focus on Climate Change and Biodiversity
Speakers highlighted Manipur’s unique biodiversity and the urgent need for preservation.
Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, L. Rameshwar, emphasized, “Our forests are shrinking. Tree plantation is crucial to combat climate change and protect endangered species.”
He added that the Forest Department would monitor sapling survival rates to ensure long-term impact.
Community Participation Encouraged
Governor Bhalla called upon civil society, NGOs, and local communities to become partners in the plantation drives.
“Environmental protection cannot be achieved by the government alone. Every citizen must contribute,” he said.
District officials announced local drives under the Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam 2.0 banner in coming weeks.
Technology to Track Progress
Officials revealed plans to use technology for better accountability.
Forest Department spokesperson said, “We will geo-tag plantations to ensure transparency and survival tracking.”
This will help measure real-time progress of Manipur’s green cover.
Connecting Tradition with Conservation
Van Mahotsav in Manipur blends tradition and modern conservation. Rituals like tree worship reflect deep respect for nature.
Environmentalist Dr. L. Hemanta said, “Our culture has always valued trees. Initiatives like Van Mahotsav revive these values for modern times.”
Broader Environmental Goals
Van Mahotsav aligns with national and global goals. India targets restoring 26 million hectares of degraded land by 2030.
Governor Bhalla said, “Manipur’s green initiatives contribute to India’s commitment under the Paris Agreement.”
Public Urged to Join Green Mission
Governor Bhalla concluded by urging citizens to continue the momentum beyond Van Mahotsav.
“Plant trees. Care for them. This is our duty to future generations,” he said.
