Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha launched an AI-based farm mission in Tripura on May 29, 2025. The initiative aims to leverage Artificial Intelligence (AI) and smart technology to increase crop productivity, ensure climate resilience, and support sustainable farming practices across the state.

Speaking at a high-level gathering at the Secretariat Complex in Agartala, the Chief Minister emphasized that AI would play a transformative role in helping farmers access precise data on soil health, weather forecasts, pest control, and crop recommendations.

Technology Meets Tradition in Tripura’s Fields

Tripura, a state with a strong agricultural base, has historically depended on traditional farming methods. With the launch of the AI-based farm mission in Tripura, the government intends to blend age-old techniques with data-driven solutions.

“AI in agriculture is not science fiction anymore—it’s a tool of empowerment for our farmers,” said Dr. Saha. “This mission is about bringing knowledge, accessibility, and real-time solutions to the grassroots level.”

Key Components of the AI-Based Farm Mission

Under this initiative, Tripura will establish digital resource centers in each block. These centers will offer:

  • AI-powered crop diagnosis tools
  • Mobile applications for real-time support
  • Drone-based field surveys
  • Automated weather stations
  • Training modules for farmers in local languages

The government has partnered with several institutions, including the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and the North Eastern Space Applications Centre (NE-SAC), to roll out these services. The Tripura Agriculture Department will supervise implementation across the eight districts.

The CM noted that AI technology allows farmers to make informed decisions, thereby reducing losses due to unpredictable weather, pest infestations, or incorrect input use.

For example, using AI models trained on regional data, the system can alert farmers about the best time to sow or harvest specific crops. Pest detection using smartphone cameras and AI diagnostics will also become widely available.

Tripura has around 2.5 lakh farming households, and the mission aims to directly reach at least 1.2 lakh farmers in the first year.

Climate-Resilient Farming Is the Future

Tripura has faced the challenges of erratic monsoons, flash floods, and soil erosion. Also, with the AI-based farm mission in Tripura, the government is promoting climate-resilient crop planning, helping farmers choose varieties that thrive under changing environmental conditions.

Further, the mission aligns with India’s National Mission on Sustainable Agriculture and Tripura’s vision of becoming a model state for green farming.

Youth and Startups to Play a Key Role

Dr. Saha also announced that local agri-tech startups will be offered incubation support through Tripura’s innovation hub. Graduates of MBB University and Tripura University will be encouraged to work with farmers to scale AI-led agricultural practices.

This move is expected to create new employment opportunities for rural youth while accelerating tech adoption in agriculture.

Political Support and Public Enthusiasm

The launch event was attended by several state ministers, agricultural scientists, and farmer associations. The program was live-streamed in community centers across rural Tripura, sparking enthusiasm among villagers.

Rina Debbarma, a farmer from Sepahijala district, said, “I never imagined I’d be using mobile apps to grow better crops. This mission makes us feel important and included in modern India.”
