Union Home Minister Amit Shah is scheduled to inaugurate and launch four major road infrastructure projects in Delhi on September 29. The projects cover key areas in east, south and north Delhi.
According to Delhi Public Works Department Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh, Shah will inaugurate the Barapullah Phase 3 elevated corridor and the Mukarba Chowk underpass. He will also lay the foundation stones for two new flyover projects.
Barapullah Phase 3 Corridor to Connect East and South Delhi
The Barapullah Phase 3 corridor is the largest of the four projects. It will provide a signal-free connection between Mayur Vihar Phase 1 and Sarai Kale Khan.
The corridor will also improve connectivity towards AIIMS and other parts of central and south Delhi. Moreover, it will connect with the existing Barapullah flyover at Sarai Kale Khan. Together, the network will create a longer signal-free route for commuters.
The project was approved in 2014, while construction began in 2015. It was initially expected to be completed in 2017. However, several delays pushed back the completion date.
The revised project cost stands at around Rs 1,635 crore, according to reports.
Corridor Expected to Ease Traffic Congestion
The Barapullah Phase 3 corridor is expected to improve traffic movement between East Delhi and South Delhi.
In addition, the project includes a three-lane elevated corridor and eight loops. Four loops are located at Sarai Kale Khan, while the other four are at Mayur Vihar.
The corridor will also connect commuters with major transport facilities in the Sarai Kale Khan area. These include railway, metro, bus and regional transport infrastructure.
The project also includes a dedicated cycle track and pedestrian-friendly infrastructure. Therefore, officials say the corridor is designed to support different categories of road users.
Modi Mill-Kalkaji Flyover Extension
The second major project involves extending the Modi Mill flyover towards Kalkaji.
The proposed extension will help create a longer signal-free corridor towards the IIT Gate area. It will include three lanes in each direction.
According to officials, the extension is part of efforts to improve traffic movement at important intersections in South Delhi. The project will also address congestion along routes connecting Captain Gaur Marg, Outer Ring Road and nearby areas.
Shah will lay the foundation stone for this project on September 29. Construction is expected to take around 24 to 30 months.
Savitri Cinema Flyover Also Gets Foundation Stone
The third project involves a new half-flyover near Savitri Cinema in South Delhi.
The proposed structure will be around 435 metres long and will have a three-lane single carriageway. It aims to improve traffic movement towards Nehru Place, Okhla and surrounding areas.
The project had earlier faced delays because of financial and administrative approvals. However, work is now moving forward, with the foundation stone scheduled to be laid on September 29.
The Modi Mill and Savitri Cinema projects have a combined estimated cost of around Rs 371.75 crore.
Mukarba Chowk Underpass to Open
The fourth project is the Mukarba Chowk underpass in North Delhi. Unlike the two flyover projects, this facility has already been completed.
The project consists of three underpasses near Gate Number 3 of the Haiderpur Badli Mor Metro station. It is located in the Shalimar Bagh area.
The underpass is expected to improve movement around the Outer Ring Road and NH-44. The area handles significant traffic, including heavy vehicles entering and leaving the city.
The project had faced delays, including a halt in work during the COVID-19 period. It has now been completed and is scheduled to be inaugurated by Shah on September 29.
Focus on Delhi’s Road Infrastructure
The four projects cover important traffic corridors across Delhi. They include an elevated corridor, flyover extensions, a new flyover and an underpass.
Together, the projects are intended to improve connectivity and reduce bottlenecks at several busy junctions. Moreover, the Barapullah Phase 3 corridor is expected to provide a more direct route between East Delhi and South Delhi.
The September 29 programme will therefore mark the opening of one completed major corridor and underpass, while also starting work on two additional flyover projects.
Projects Aim to Improve Daily Commuting
Delhi continues to face heavy traffic pressure at several major junctions. Consequently, road infrastructure projects have become an important part of efforts to improve daily mobility.
The Barapullah Phase 3 corridor, in particular, is expected to provide a signal-free route between Mayur Vihar and Sarai Kale Khan. Meanwhile, the other projects target congestion points in South and North Delhi.
With Shah scheduled to inaugurate the projects on September 29, the city is set to add new road infrastructure aimed at improving traffic flow and connectivity.
