In a landmark decision set to reshape Assam’s higher education landscape, the state Cabinet has given its nod to establish Swahid Kanaklata Barua University in Gohpur. With an estimated investment of Rs 400 crore. The university will be set up at the historic Bholaguri Tea Estate. Its located in the heart of Biswanath district.
The announcement was made by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Besides, following the weekly Cabinet meeting held on Wednesday. Also, he described the move as a long-awaited tribute to Kanaklata Barua. Its Assam’s iconic freedom fighter, and a concrete step toward educational empowerment in Upper Assam.
A Tribute to a National Heroine
The university is named after Swahid Kanaklata Barua, one of the youngest martyrs of the Indian freedom struggle. She was only 17 when she was shot dead by British forces while leading a procession during the Quit India Movement in 1942. Her bravery and sacrifice remain deeply etched in Assam’s collective memory.
According to the Chief Minister, the university will not only honor her legacy but also serve as a beacon of learning, leadership, and patriotism for generations to come.
“This will be more than just an institution. It will be a monument of our gratitude to Kanaklata’s fearless contribution to India’s freedom,” Sarma said.
Boost to Higher Education in North Assam
The Swahid Kanaklata Barua University in Gohpur is expected to significantly boost access to quality higher education in the Upper Assam and northern bank regions, where many students still travel long distances to pursue postgraduate or research studies.
The Rs 400 crore allocation will be used for state-of-the-art infrastructure. Also, including administrative buildings, residential hostels, digital classrooms, libraries, and research centers. The campus is envisioned as green and tech-enabled. By aligning with Assam’s goal of creating future-ready academic hubs.
Location With Historical Significance
The university will be built on land belonging to the Bholaguri Tea Estate, a site chosen not just for its availability but also its symbolic importance. Gohpur was Kanaklata’s birthplace and the site of her final act of resistance. Establishing a university here is widely seen as a deeply emotional and symbolic gesture.
Senior officials in the education department confirmed that land acquisition procedures are underway and that construction is expected to begin by early 2026.

Apart from its academic mission, the university project is expected to generate hundreds of direct and indirect jobs during and after the construction phase.
