The Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)) has expressed serious concern over the deteriorating health of social activist Sonam Wangchuk, accusing the Central government of displaying an “insensitive” attitude towards his prolonged hunger strike. The Left party urged the Centre to respond with compassion and engage in meaningful dialogue instead of allowing the situation to worsen.
Wangchuk, who has been on an indefinite hunger strike over demands related to alleged examination irregularities and education reforms, was shifted from Delhi’s Jantar Mantar to Safdarjung Hospital after his health deteriorated significantly. The move has triggered strong political reactions from several opposition parties, with CPI(M) joining those questioning the government’s handling of the protest.
CPI(M) Raises Alarm Over Wangchuk’s Health
Expressing concern over Wangchuk’s medical condition, CPI(M) said the activist’s health has become a matter of grave importance and should not be ignored. The party criticised what it described as the government’s failure to address the concerns raised through a peaceful democratic protest.
According to CPI(M), prolonged silence from the authorities has only intensified the crisis. The party called on the Centre to prioritise Wangchuk’s well-being and resolve the issue through constructive engagement rather than confrontation.

Wangchuk was admitted to Safdarjung Hospital after doctors warned that his prolonged fast had resulted in severe dehydration and other health risks. Authorities said the transfer followed medical advice and judicial directions aimed at safeguarding his health.
However, the hospitalisation has become a political flashpoint, with opposition parties questioning the manner in which Wangchuk was shifted from the protest site. Supporters have maintained that he intends to continue his hunger strike despite being admitted to the hospital.
Nationwide Protest Call by CPI(M)
Alongside expressing concern over Wangchuk’s health, CPI(M) announced plans to organise nationwide protests to highlight the issue and press the government to respond to the activist’s demands. The party also demanded the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, holding him politically accountable for the controversy surrounding the examination issues that prompted the protest.
