The Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)) has expressed serious concern over the deteriorating health of social activist Sonam Wangchuk, accusing the Central government of displaying an “insensitive” attitude towards his prolonged hunger strike. The Left party urged the Centre to respond with compassion and engage in meaningful dialogue instead of allowing the situation to worsen.
Wangchuk, who has been on an indefinite hunger strike over demands related to alleged examination irregularities and education reforms, was shifted from Delhi’s Jantar Mantar to Safdarjung Hospital after his health deteriorated significantly. The move has triggered strong political reactions from several opposition parties, with CPI(M) joining those questioning the government’s handling of the protest.
CPI(M) Raises Alarm Over Wangchuk’s Health
Expressing concern over Wangchuk’s medical condition, CPI(M) said the activist’s health has become a matter of grave importance and should not be ignored. The party criticised what it described as the government’s failure to address the concerns raised through a peaceful democratic protest.
According to CPI(M), prolonged silence from the authorities has only intensified the crisis. The party called on the Centre to prioritise Wangchuk’s well-being and resolve the issue through constructive engagement rather than confrontation.
Government Accused of Being ‘Insensitive’
The Left party described the government’s approach as “insensitive,” arguing that peaceful protests deserve a democratic response instead of administrative action alone. CPI(M) maintained that governments in a democracy should remain open to dialogue with citizens expressing legitimate concerns through non-violent means.
Party leaders said that humanitarian considerations should take precedence, particularly when a protester’s health has reached a critical stage. They urged the Centre to demonstrate empathy and initiate discussions to address the issues raised by Wangchuk and his supporters.
Demand for Immediate Dialogue
CPI(M) appealed to the Central government to begin immediate talks with Wangchuk and representatives of the protest movement. The party argued that meaningful dialogue remains the most effective way to resolve public grievances and reduce political tensions.
The Left party emphasised that prolonged confrontation benefits neither the government nor the protesters and called for a peaceful and negotiated solution that respects democratic principles.
Hospitalisation Sparks Political Reactions
Wangchuk was admitted to Safdarjung Hospital after doctors warned that his prolonged fast had resulted in severe dehydration and other health risks. Authorities said the transfer followed medical advice and judicial directions aimed at safeguarding his health.
However, the hospitalisation has become a political flashpoint, with opposition parties questioning the manner in which Wangchuk was shifted from the protest site. Supporters have maintained that he intends to continue his hunger strike despite being admitted to the hospital.
Nationwide Protest Call by CPI(M)
Alongside expressing concern over Wangchuk’s health, CPI(M) announced plans to organise nationwide protests to highlight the issue and press the government to respond to the activist’s demands. The party also demanded the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, holding him politically accountable for the controversy surrounding the examination issues that prompted the protest.
Party leaders said the demonstrations would aim to draw attention to students’ concerns, education reforms, and the need for greater government accountability.
Debate Over Democratic Rights Continues
The developments have reignited debate over the balance between ensuring an individual’s health and protecting the right to peaceful protest. Opposition parties, including CPI(M), have argued that democratic dissent should be met with dialogue, while the government has maintained that medical intervention became necessary because of Wangchuk’s deteriorating condition.
Legal proceedings concerning Wangchuk’s health have also drawn attention, with the Delhi High Court previously taking up petitions seeking medical intervention as concerns over his condition intensified.
Political Pressure Mounts on the Centre
As Sonam Wangchuk continues his hunger strike under medical supervision, political pressure on the Central government continues to grow. CPI(M)’s criticism adds to a series of opposition voices demanding a more humane and consultative approach to resolving the issue.
The party has reiterated that protecting democratic rights and responding to peaceful protests through dialogue are essential responsibilities of any government. With Wangchuk’s health remaining under close medical observation, the controversy is expected to remain at the centre of national political discourse in the coming days.
