Deendayal Upadhyaya birth anniversary was observed in Agartala on Friday, September 25, with Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha and other dignitaries paying tribute to the late political thinker and highlighting his ideas of Integral Humanism and Antyodaya. The state-level programme was held at Muktadhara Auditorium and was organised by the Information and Cultural Affairs Department of the Tripura government.
The occasion marked the 110th birth anniversary of Upadhyaya, who was born on September 25, 1916, in Nagla Chandraban in present-day Mathura district of Uttar Pradesh. His political ideas and writings have continued to influence the Bharatiya Jana Sangh and, subsequently, the Bharatiya Janata Party.
Tripura honours Upadhyaya in Agartala
The main state programme brought together government representatives and other dignitaries to remember Upadhyaya’s contribution to Indian political thought. Chief Minister Manik Saha said his life and philosophy continue to inspire a vision of an inclusive society rooted in Integral Humanism.
The focus on inclusion and welfare reflected one of the central themes associated with Upadhyaya’s philosophy. His concept of Antyodaya emphasised the upliftment of the person at the last end of society. The Tripura Pradesh BJP separately observed the anniversary at its state headquarters in Agartala on Friday morning. Senior leaders, office-bearers, municipal representatives and party workers offered floral tributes to Upadhyaya’s portrait.
State BJP vice-president Ratan Ghosh, Agartala Municipal Corporation Mayor Dipak Majumdar, state general secretary Chandan Debnath, Deputy Mayor Manika Das Dutta and other leaders attended the programme.
Speakers at the party event highlighted Upadhyaya’s emphasis on the welfare of marginalised sections and his concepts of Integral Humanism and Antyodaya. They also described his ideas as part of the ideological foundation guiding the party’s organisational activities.
The separate government and party programmes underlined the continuing public observance of Upadhyaya’s birth anniversary in Tripura.
National tributes underline Antyodaya message
The anniversary was also marked at the national level. Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to Upadhyaya on Friday and highlighted Antyodaya, particularly the upliftment of people at the margins of society, as an element of his nation-building vision.
The Prime Minister also urged people to draw inspiration from Upadhyaya’s ideals and social responsibilities. The national observance coincided with commemorative events in several parts of the country.
For Tripura, the anniversary came amid continued discussions around welfare, rural development and access to public services. The emphasis on reaching disadvantaged communities has also featured in recent initiatives in the state.
Antyodaya focus extends to new digital initiative
Another programme linked to the anniversary is the planned launch of the Antyodaya Digital Mission in Agartala. The initiative, backed by the Itibachak Barta Foundation, is designed to take technology-enabled healthcare, education, skills, employment and other services closer to rural and underserved communities.
The mission includes plans for digital healthcare services, education support, digital tourism, sports, culture, employment and entrepreneurship. Its organisers have said the programme aims to reduce the digital divide and make services more accessible to people in villages.
The launch date was deliberately scheduled for September 25, coinciding with Upadhyaya’s birth anniversary and the broader emphasis on Antyodaya.
