Tripura Police detained four Bangladeshi nationals, including two minors, at Agartala Railway Station on Saturday. Officials said the individuals were apprehended for illegally entering India and attempting to travel to Delhi by train.

A joint team comprising the Government Railway Police (GRP), Railway Protection Force (RPF), and intelligence units carried out the operation following a tip-off. Authorities suspect the detained individuals had entered Tripura’s border areas without valid documents.

The Arrest and Investigation Of Bangladeshi Nationals

The four accused include two adult males and two minor boys. They were questioned on the spot and taken into custody after failing to produce any valid identification or legal entry permits of Bangladeshi Nationals.

“Based on their preliminary interrogation, they confessed to crossing into India through an unmanned section of the India-Bangladesh border, hoping to reach Delhi,” said a GRP officer at Agartala.

The case has been handed over to the local immigration office and the state’s Special Branch for further investigation. A case under the Foreigners Act, 1946, has been registered.

Travel Plan Thwarted

According to sources, the accused purchased general train tickets to Anand Vihar Terminal, Delhi, and were waiting for the train at the platform when they were arrested. Their presence reportedly drew suspicion due to inconsistent replies during routine questioning by security officials.

“We are probing the possibility of a human trafficking network or tout involvement,” said an officer from the Intelligence Bureau.

Border Security Under Review

The arrests come amid heightened focus on illegal migration in the region. Tripura shares an 856 km-long border with Bangladesh, much of which is fenced. However, certain stretches remain vulnerable due to rivers, dense forests, and hilly terrain.

The Border Security Force (BSF) has increased patrolling in sensitive areas near Sonamura, Kailashahar, and Dharmanagar.

“We are reviewing surveillance at all known infiltration points. Coordination with village defense parties and border intelligence units has also been stepped up,” said a senior BSF officer.

Officials confirmed that the two minors have been placed under child welfare authorities, while the adults have been lodged in police custody. After necessary legal formalities, the Bangladesh High Commission will be informed regarding possible repatriation procedures.

According to immigration norms, foreign nationals caught without proper documents are produced before the Foreigner’s Tribunal. In most cases, they are either deported or kept in detention centers until diplomatic procedures are finalized.

Rising Cases of Illegal Entry: Bangladeshi Nationals

This incident adds to the growing number of illegal crossings recorded this year. Just last week, a Bangladeshi national and an Indian tout were arrested at the same railway station. Authorities fear that Agartala may be turning into a hub for cross-border movements.

Security agencies have called for advanced facial recognition systems, biometric checks, and automated ticketing to help curb such activities.

Political and Public Reaction

The development has sparked discussion in local political circles. A BJP spokesperson demanded strict action against illegal networks facilitating cross-border entry, while opposition leaders urged the government to address the root causes of migration, such as poverty and lack of opportunity in border areas.

Citizens on social media expressed concern over potential threats to internal security, urging tighter screening measures at public transport hubs.

Tripura Police and security agencies remain on high alert as they tighten vigilance across the railway network and border routes. With growing concerns over national security, enforcement authorities are expected to take swift and visible action to prevent further illegal infiltration.
