Gaurav Gogoi slams Assam, Centre over 'failure' to resolve Nagaland border dispute

Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi has criticised both the Assam government and the Central government over the continued failure to resolve the long-pending Assam-Nagaland border dispute, alleging that despite repeated assurances, the issue remains unresolved and continues to affect residents living along the inter-state boundary.

Addressing the matter, Gogoi said that people residing in the border areas have faced uncertainty, administrative challenges, and periodic tensions for decades. He questioned the effectiveness of both governments in finding a permanent solution despite the dispute remaining on the national agenda for several years.

The Congress leader urged the authorities to take concrete and time-bound measures to address the issue through dialogue, constitutional mechanisms, and sustained engagement with all stakeholders.

Border dispute remains a longstanding concern

The Assam-Nagaland border dispute is one of the oldest inter-state boundary issues in the country, with disagreements dating back several decades over the demarcation of territorial boundaries.

The dispute involves multiple stretches of the border where both states have historically laid claim to certain areas. Over the years, the issue has occasionally resulted in tensions between communities, administrative challenges, and law enforcement concerns.

Successive governments at both the state and Central levels have held several rounds of discussions aimed at resolving the matter, while legal proceedings and negotiations have continued simultaneously.

Despite these efforts, a final settlement has remained elusive, prompting repeated calls from political leaders and civil society organisations for a lasting resolution.

Gogoi questions progress despite repeated assurances

Gaurav Gogoi argued that repeated announcements regarding dialogue and negotiations have not translated into a permanent settlement on the ground.

He said that both the Assam government and the Centre have consistently assured residents that the issue would be resolved through mutual discussions, yet people living in border villages continue to face uncertainty.

According to the Congress MP, the prolonged delay has affected public confidence and highlighted the need for stronger political commitment to resolving the dispute.

He maintained that meaningful progress requires regular consultations between the concerned governments, transparent communication with affected communities, and sustained administrative efforts.

Concerns over residents in border areas

Highlighting the impact of the unresolved dispute, Gogoi said residents living near the disputed boundary continue to face challenges related to security, access to public services, and developmental activities.

Border villages have often experienced uncertainty regarding administrative jurisdiction, while infrastructure development and public welfare initiatives have sometimes been affected by the ongoing dispute.

The Congress leader stated that safeguarding the interests of local communities should remain the government’s foremost priority while pursuing negotiations.

He also stressed the importance of ensuring that residents have uninterrupted access to education, healthcare, road connectivity, and other essential public services regardless of the status of the dispute.

Calls for stronger Centre-State coordination

Gogoi emphasised that resolving an inter-state border dispute requires close coordination between the respective state governments and the Central government.

He argued that the Centre should play a more proactive role in facilitating dialogue, encouraging consensus, and ensuring that discussions move towards a mutually acceptable solution.

According to him, effective coordination between all stakeholders is essential for addressing both legal and administrative aspects of the dispute.

He further observed that timely intervention and continuous engagement could help prevent misunderstandings and reduce tensions in sensitive border areas.

Dialogue remains key to lasting resolution

Reiterating the need for peaceful engagement, Gogoi called for renewed dialogue between Assam and Nagaland to achieve a durable settlement.

He stated that negotiations based on mutual respect, constitutional principles, and the interests of affected communities remain the most appropriate path towards resolving the longstanding issue.

The Congress leader said that prolonged uncertainty benefits neither state and emphasised the importance of reaching an agreement that promotes peace, stability, and harmonious relations between neighbouring communities.

He also urged political leaders from both states to work collectively in the larger interest of regional development and social harmony.

Importance of maintaining peace in border areas

While criticising the pace of progress, Gogoi stressed that maintaining peace and law and order in the border region remains essential.

He acknowledged the efforts of security forces and civil administrations in preventing escalation during periods of tension but noted that a permanent political solution remains necessary to eliminate recurring disputes.

Officials have consistently maintained that peace along the Assam-Nagaland border is crucial for ensuring the safety of residents and promoting development in the region.

The Congress MP observed that long-term stability can only be achieved through a mutually accepted settlement supported by both governments.

Border resolution important for regional development

Gogoi also highlighted the broader developmental implications of resolving the Assam-Nagaland border dispute.

He said that clarity regarding administrative boundaries would facilitate better infrastructure planning, improved governance, and more effective implementation of government schemes in border areas.

The resolution of the dispute could also encourage economic activity, improve connectivity, and strengthen cooperation between neighbouring states in sectors such as trade, agriculture, tourism, and public services.

According to him, peaceful and clearly demarcated borders contribute significantly to regional stability and inclusive development.

Renewed focus on one of Northeast’s oldest disputes

The Congress MP’s remarks have once again drawn attention to one of the Northeast’s longest-standing inter-state disputes.

The Assam-Nagaland border issue has periodically featured in political discussions, judicial proceedings, and inter-governmental negotiations, reflecting its importance for both states.

Observers believe continued dialogue, confidence-building measures, and sustained political engagement will remain essential for moving towards a comprehensive settlement acceptable to all stakeholders.

Authorities have repeatedly affirmed their commitment to resolving inter-state boundary disputes through peaceful and constitutional means.

Call for decisive action on a longstanding issue

Gaurav Gogoi’s criticism of the Assam and Central governments reflects growing demands for a more decisive approach to resolving the decades-old Assam-Nagaland border dispute. Emphasising the need for stronger political will, sustained dialogue, and coordinated action, he urged both governments to move beyond assurances and work towards a permanent settlement.

As discussions on inter-state boundary issues continue, the focus remains on protecting the interests of border residents while maintaining peace and promoting regional development. A lasting resolution to the Assam-Nagaland border dispute would not only address a long-pending administrative challenge but also strengthen cooperation, stability, and economic progress across the northeastern region.
