Kangpokpi gunfight triggered fresh security concerns in Manipur on Monday, September 7, after armed groups exchanged fire in Lhunjang village along the IT Road and a primary school was allegedly set ablaze. The incident took place early in the morning and comes amid continuing tensions and sporadic violence in Kangpokpi district.
Kangpokpi gunfight lasts around 30 minutes
According to police, the firing began at around 5 am in Lhunjang village, which falls under Chalwa Police Station. The village is located approximately 12 kilometres from the police station and has around 40 residents.
Police said armed miscreants approached the village with an apparent intention to attack. Security personnel stationed in the area retaliated, leading to an exchange of fire that continued for nearly 30 minutes.
The area has security posts manned by personnel from the Manipur Rifles and displaced personnel of the India Reserve Battalion, or IRB. Despite the intensity of the firing, no injuries or casualties were reported in the exchange, according to police.
Primary school allegedly set on fire
The most serious development came after the firing stopped. Armed miscreants allegedly set fire to Lhunjang Primary School while retreating from the area.
The school building was reportedly completely gutted in the blaze. Police have not yet identified those responsible for the alleged arson or established their group affiliation.
The destruction of an educational facility has raised concerns among residents because schools are essential public institutions in remote villages. The incident also highlights the wider impact of continuing violence on civilian infrastructure in parts of Kangpokpi.
Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the fire and the identity of those involved.
Security concerns remain high
The latest Kangpokpi gunfight comes against the backdrop of a series of violent incidents along the IT Road and other parts of the district in recent weeks.
On August 31, two villagers were killed and another was injured in a gun attack at N Teikhang, according to officials cited by the Times of India. Several houses were also reportedly set on fire during the incident. The attack followed an earlier ambush in the district in which four Naga civilians were killed and another person was injured.
Other recent incidents have also involved attacks on villages and the burning of residential properties. Reports from late August and early September indicate continuing insecurity in remote areas, with civilians facing the risk of being caught between armed groups.
IT Road remains a sensitive area
The IT Road has emerged as one of the areas where security concerns remain particularly serious. Remote villages along the route have witnessed repeated reports of firing, attacks and property damage.
The latest Kangpokpi gunfight again highlights the challenges faced by security forces in protecting scattered settlements in difficult terrain. The presence of security posts has helped provide protection in some areas, but the latest incident shows that armed groups can still create serious risks for residents and public facilities.
