Arunachal CM Pema Khandu discusses Rs 22 crore Likabali road project with officials

Likabali, a key town in Arunachal Pradesh’s Lower Siang district, is set to benefit from a major infrastructure push. The government has launched a new road project worth Rs 22 crore, aiming to improve transport connectivity, stimulate local development, and provide easier access to remote areas.

Chief Minister Pema Khandu recently reviewed the project and praised the initiative for aligning with the state’s broader development goals. He emphasized the importance of rural infrastructure in driving economic growth and creating employment opportunities.

Project details and expected impact

The project focuses on developing a 13-kilometre stretch of all-weather road connecting Likabali to nearby border villages and internal subdivisions. This new road will improve accessibility for residents, farmers, and small businesses that often struggle due to poor transport links, especially during the monsoon season.

According to officials from the Public Works Department (PWD), the construction will include proper drainage systems, retaining walls in landslide-prone zones, and high-quality bitumen surfacing. Work is expected to start in the coming weeks and be completed within 12 months.

Deputy Commissioner Rujjum Rakshap stated that the road project will also help in streamlining emergency services, including ambulances and supply vehicles. “For years, people living in the remote belts of Likabali have had to wait hours for essential services. This road will be a lifeline,” he said.

Boost for local economy and employment

The project is also expected to create local job opportunities during the construction phase. Officials confirmed that contractors have been directed to hire workers from within the district wherever possible. This step is part of the government’s commitment to ensuring community involvement and providing livelihood support.

Local business owners are optimistic. Joram Tamuk, who runs a hardware store in Likabali, said, “Better roads will mean faster deliveries and more customers from nearby villages. We’ve needed this for a long time.”

Farmers, too, are hopeful. The new road will reduce travel time to markets, ensuring fresh produce can reach buyers without spoilage. This change could lead to higher incomes and better price realization for rural producers.

Focus on border and rural connectivity

The Likabali road project is part of a broader push by the Arunachal government to enhance rural and border connectivity. Many villages in Lower Siang and neighboring areas remain cut off during the rainy season, leading to isolation, disrupted education, and limited access to health care.

CM Khandu highlighted that such infrastructure initiatives are vital in securing border settlements. “Connectivity is crucial not just for convenience but also for national security and cultural integration,” he said during a press interaction.

He also reiterated that Arunachal’s remote districts deserve the same development focus as urban centers. The government’s goal is to ensure that no region remains in the shadow of underdevelopment.

Local reactions and future outlook

Residents of Likabali have welcomed the project announcement with enthusiasm. Gram Panchayat members, student groups, and youth volunteers have expressed their willingness to support the work and ensure timely completion.

Lower Siang MLA Kardo Nyigyor played a key role in pushing for the project. He thanked the Chief Minister and the PWD for responding to local needs. “We are determined to see Likabali become a model town in Arunachal,” he said.

Looking ahead, the state government is considering similar road projects in nearby towns like Aalo and Daporijo. These initiatives aim to create an interconnected network of roads that serve not only local communities but also facilitate tourism and trade across the state.
