Nagaland liquor seizure operations intensified in Medziphema after police recovered 581.520 litres of Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) during raids on suspected liquor-selling outlets and storage premises in Chümoukedima district. The operation was conducted on October 14, following complaints from residents about the alleged unchecked sale and storage of liquor in the area. The Nagaland Police announced the seizure on October 15, reiterating their commitment to enforcing the state’s prohibition law.
Police Seize 581.520 Litres of Liquor in Medziphema
According to a press release issued by Nagaland Police headquarters, the operation targeted locations suspected of selling and storing liquor illegally. Police teams searched several establishments, storage premises and sheds around Medziphema town and neighbouring areas.
The total quantity seized was recorded as 581.520 litres of IMFL in the respective seizure memos. Various brands of Indian Made Foreign Liquor were recovered during the searches.
The operation followed complaints from members of the public and responsible persons in Medziphema, who raised concerns about the alleged continued sale and storage of liquor despite the prohibition law in force in Nagaland.
Police said the action was intended to address these complaints and strengthen enforcement against the illegal liquor trade.
Raids Cover Medziphema Town Junction and NH-29
The search operation covered suspected locations under the jurisdiction of the Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC), Chümoukedima, and Medziphema Police Station.
Police teams inspected suspected liquor-selling establishments and storage facilities around Medziphema Town Junction, Jharnapani Junction and adjoining areas along National Highway 29.
These locations formed part of the enforcement drive aimed at identifying places where liquor was allegedly being sold or stored in violation of applicable laws.
The operation also highlighted the importance of public cooperation in identifying suspected illegal activities. Complaints from residents played a key role in prompting the searches, according to the police statement.
By targeting multiple locations in and around Medziphema, authorities sought to curb the availability of liquor through unauthorised sales and storage.
Two Suspects Detained During the Operation
During the raids, police detained two individuals suspected of involvement in liquor sales. Both individuals were subsequently released on personal recognisance (PR) bonds.
A PR bond generally allows a person to be released on a personal undertaking to comply with applicable legal requirements, without necessarily involving a cash deposit.
Police confirmed that further proceedings were being undertaken in accordance with the relevant legal provisions. The release of the two individuals on PR bonds does not, by itself, determine the outcome of any subsequent proceedings.
Authorities have not indicated in the reported statement whether additional arrests or seizures are expected in connection with the Medziphema operation.
The seizure and the ongoing proceedings form part of the police department’s wider efforts to address suspected violations of the state’s liquor prohibition law.
Nagaland Police Enforce Liquor Prohibition Act
The operation was carried out as part of efforts to enforce the Nagaland Liquor Total Prohibition Act, 1989. The legislation provides the legal framework for the state’s prohibition policy and restrictions concerning liquor.
Despite the restrictions, enforcement agencies continue to conduct searches and take action against suspected illegal sales and storage. The latest seizure in Medziphema reflects the challenges authorities face in preventing the circulation of liquor through unauthorised channels.
The development comes amid broader concerns about illicit and potentially adulterated alcohol in Nagaland. In September 2026, suspected spurious liquor consumption was linked to multiple deaths in Mokokchung and Tuensang districts, prompting investigations and intensified enforcement measures.
Those incidents have drawn attention to the potential public health risks associated with illicit alcohol. However, police have not reported any direct connection between the Medziphema seizure and the separate suspected spurious liquor cases.
The latest operation therefore represents a local enforcement action within a wider state-level effort to restrict illegal liquor sales and storage.
Police Urge Residents to Report Illegal Liquor Sales
Nagaland Police have appealed to the public to cooperate with law enforcement agencies and share information about suspected illegal liquor sales and storage.
Authorities have emphasised that information from residents can help identify locations requiring inspection and support efforts to implement the prohibition law more effectively.
The department has reiterated its commitment to responding to public complaints and strengthening enforcement against activities that violate the law.
The 581.520-litre seizure in Medziphema marks a significant recovery during the October 14 operation. With further legal proceedings underway, attention will remain on how authorities follow up on the seizure and address complaints about unauthorised liquor activity.
Continued enforcement, timely reporting and cooperation between residents and officials will be important as Nagaland Police work to curb illegal liquor sales and storage across the state.
