Manipur Deputy CM Nemcha Kipgen calls for support to local products, stronger SHGs

Manipur Deputy Chief Minister Nemcha Kipgen has called for greater support for locally made products and stronger self-help groups (SHGs) to promote livelihoods and economic opportunities in the state.

Kipgen emphasised the importance of supporting local entrepreneurs, artisans and SHG members while speaking at a programme focused on women’s economic participation and local enterprise development.

She said stronger community-based organisations can help create sustainable livelihood opportunities, particularly for women in rural and semi-urban areas.

Call to Support Local Products

Kipgen urged consumers to give greater preference to products made by local entrepreneurs and community groups.

Supporting locally produced goods can help small businesses increase sales and create a wider customer base. It can also encourage artisans and producers to continue developing traditional skills and new products.

The Deputy Chief Minister stressed that local products need stronger visibility and market access to compete in a wider marketplace.

She called on government departments, institutions and consumers to contribute to creating better opportunities for local producers.

Stronger Self-Help Groups

A major focus of Kipgen’s remarks was the strengthening of self-help groups.

SHGs have become an important mechanism for women to work collectively, access financial resources and develop small enterprises. Members can engage in activities ranging from food processing and handicrafts to agriculture, tailoring and other services.

Kipgen called for greater institutional support for these groups so that they can expand their activities and reach larger markets.

She also highlighted the importance of training and capacity building for SHG members.

Women’s Economic Participation

The Deputy Chief Minister linked stronger SHGs with women’s economic empowerment.

Women-led enterprises can provide additional household income while also creating employment within local communities. SHGs can help women develop business skills and gain greater access to markets.

Kipgen said women should be encouraged to move beyond small-scale production and explore opportunities to develop sustainable enterprises.

Access to training, technology, finance and marketing support can help SHG members improve the quality and scale of their products.

Focus on Entrepreneurship

The call for stronger SHGs also forms part of a wider emphasis on entrepreneurship in Manipur.

Small businesses and community enterprises can contribute to local economic activity by creating employment and encouraging the use of locally available resources.

Local entrepreneurs often face challenges related to finance, transportation, packaging, branding and access to markets. Addressing these issues can help locally produced goods reach consumers beyond their immediate communities.

Government programmes aimed at skill development and enterprise promotion can provide additional support.

Improving Market Access

For local producers, manufacturing a product is only one part of building a successful enterprise.

Access to reliable markets is equally important. Producers need opportunities to display their products, connect with buyers and receive fair returns.

Kipgen’s emphasis on supporting local products highlights the need to strengthen this connection between producers and consumers.

Local fairs, exhibitions, digital marketplaces and institutional procurement can provide avenues for SHGs and small businesses to expand their customer base.

SHGs Can Support Rural Livelihoods

Self-help groups can play an important role in strengthening rural livelihoods.

By pooling resources and working collectively, members can undertake economic activities that may be difficult to manage individually. Groups can also provide members with opportunities to share knowledge and develop common business strategies.

In Manipur, SHGs are involved in a variety of activities, including agriculture-related enterprises, handicrafts, food products and other livelihood initiatives.

Greater access to technology and professional training could help these groups improve productivity and product quality.

Importance of Branding and Quality

Local products also need effective branding and quality standards to compete in larger markets.

Packaging, labelling and product presentation can influence consumer choices. At the same time, consistent quality can help businesses build customer trust and establish repeat markets.

Training SHG members in these areas can therefore complement financial assistance and production support.

Kipgen’s call for stronger local markets comes in this wider context of helping community-based enterprises become more sustainable.

Government and Community Role

The development of local enterprises requires participation from multiple stakeholders.

Government agencies can provide training, infrastructure, financial assistance and market linkages. At the same time, consumers can support local producers by choosing locally made products.

Community organisations and SHGs can also work together to identify market opportunities and develop products based on local skills and resources.

Such collaboration can strengthen the connection between livelihood programmes and local economic development.

Supporting Manipur’s Local Economy

Greater demand for locally produced goods can create a multiplier effect within communities.

When consumers purchase products made by local entrepreneurs, a larger share of the economic activity can remain within the local economy. Increased sales can allow small producers to invest in equipment, hire workers and expand production.

For SHGs, stronger markets can also translate into more sustainable income opportunities for members.

Focus on Sustainable Livelihoods

Kipgen’s appeal for support to local products and stronger SHGs places livelihood generation at the centre of community development.

The emphasis on women-led enterprises, local entrepreneurship and market access reflects the need to create economic opportunities that can continue beyond individual government programmes.

With appropriate training, financial support and market connections, SHGs can develop from small community groups into sustainable enterprises.

The Deputy Chief Minister’s call therefore highlights the combined role of consumers, government institutions and community organisations in strengthening Manipur’s local economy and creating more opportunities for women and local entrepreneurs.
