Mizoram CM Lalduhoma Meets PM Modi for Northeast Development Push
New Delhi, July 30, 2025 Mizoram CM Lalduhoma held a high-level meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the national capital to discuss key developmental and humanitarian concerns affecting the state of Mizoram and the broader Northeast region. This meeting, which marked a pivotal moment in Centre-State cooperation, primarily focused on the pressing issues of infrastructure development, economic empowerment, and refugee management in Mizoram.
The visit comes at a time when the Northeastern state faces mounting challenges, including the influx of refugees from neighboring Myanmar and Manipur, road connectivity gaps, and the need for sustainable economic growth. Chief Minister Lalduhoma expressed optimism about the outcomes of the meeting, emphasizing the Centre’s willingness to extend full support to the state’s initiatives.
Infrastructure Development: Bridging the Gaps
The meeting with PM Modi placed a special emphasis on strengthening the infrastructure network in Mizoram. Lalduhoma highlighted the urgent need for better road and rail connectivity to improve trade and mobility in the landlocked state. He advocated for the expedited completion of ongoing National Highway projects and proposed new linkages with regional transport corridors to integrate Mizoram into the national logistics grid.
PM Modi assured that infrastructure in the Northeast is a top priority under the Gati Shakti Master Plan. He promised additional funding and technical assistance to accelerate the road and railway projects that remain stuck in various stages of execution.
Economic Empowerment: Making Mizoram Self-Reliant
CM Lalduhoma discussed a roadmap for economic empowerment through skill development, agro-processing units, and increased investment in tourism and handicrafts. He presented a proposal for an Integrated Industrial Park in Aizawl to attract micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), which would generate employment and contribute to self-sufficiency.
PM Modi responded positively, stating that the government would explore ways to integrate Mizoram’s local industries with larger national supply chains. He urged Mizoram to take advantage of centrally sponsored schemes such as Startup India, Make in India, and the North East Industrial Development Scheme (NEIDS).
Refugee Management: Seeking Long-Term Solutions
The influx of refugees from Myanmar and Manipur has placed considerable strain on Mizoram’s resources. Lalduhoma briefed the Prime Minister on the socio-economic burden being shouldered by local communities. He requested more financial aid and infrastructural support for refugee camps, medical facilities, and education centers for displaced persons.
PM Modi acknowledged the humanitarian dimensions of the crisis and praised Mizoram’s people for their compassion. He assured Lalduhoma of the Centre’s continued assistance and indicated that a central task force may be formed to coordinate relief efforts, ensuring better synergy between state and national agencies.
Environmental Sustainability: Protecting the Green State
Lalduhoma and PM Modi also discussed the need for sustainable practices in Mizoram’s development. The CM urged for greater central support in implementing climate-resilient infrastructure, reforestation projects, and clean energy initiatives, including solar and mini-hydro schemes tailored for hilly terrain.
The PM reaffirmed the government’s commitment to making the Northeast a model region for green growth and emphasized Mizoram’s role in achieving India’s carbon neutrality goals.
Empowering Youth and Women
Recognizing the state’s large youth population, Lalduhoma sought special packages for skill development centers and entrepreneurship training. He also proposed a Women’s Economic Empowerment Scheme, aimed at supporting SHGs (Self Help Groups), female artisans, and women-led startups in Mizoram.
Modi welcomed the suggestions and directed the Ministries of Skill Development and Women & Child Development to engage directly with the Mizoram government to fast-track relevant proposals.
Political and Administrative Cooperation
Beyond development, the meeting symbolized a fresh era of cooperation between the central government and Mizoram’s new leadership. PM Modi appreciated CM Lalduhoma’s proactive approach and assured that the Centre would work collaboratively with all state governments in the Northeast regardless of political alignment, to ensure holistic progress.
The CM’s visit to the capital, culminating in a productive dialogue with PM Modi, sets the tone for renewed cooperation and sustained focus on Northeast India’s transformation. With promises of greater investments, policy coordination, and socio-economic support, the Lalduhoma-Modi meeting is expected to bear long-term fruit for Mizoram.Times of India | Additional Insights: PMO India
