Mizoram Police have seized narcotics valued at more than Rs 16 crore since September 1, marking a major success in the state’s ongoing fight against drug trafficking. The series of operations, conducted across multiple districts, led to the recovery of large quantities of heroin, methamphetamine tablets, and ganja. Several traffickers, including foreign nationals, were also arrested during these operations, underlining the growing regional nature of the drug network.
According to official reports, the seizures are part of a sustained crackdown launched under the directive of Mizoram’s Director General of Police (DGP). The coordinated efforts involved joint operations by the Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF), local police units, and border security agencies. During interrogation, several suspects disclosed details about cross-border coordination and supply chains involving handlers based outside India. The police have also shared key findings with central enforcement bodies, including the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), for coordinated action.
The DGP stated that financial investigations are underway to trace money trails connected to drug transactions. Authorities aim to dismantle the entire supply network rather than merely arrest couriers or local distributors.
Strengthening Law Enforcement and Border Vigilance
The Mizoram Police have intensified surveillance along major highways and entry points connecting to other northeastern states. Checkpoints equipped with scanners and trained sniffer dogs have been installed to detect hidden contraband. Moreover, the government is investing in technology-driven monitoring systems to assist officers in identifying suspicious movements across difficult terrain.

He urged citizens to report suspicious activities through helplines and community policing programs. “Public participation ensures that traffickers find it harder to operate undetected,” he said.
The state government has also encouraged rehabilitation programs for recovering addicts. Civil society organizations have been working with health departments to offer counseling and medical assistance to individuals affected by substance abuse.
Political and Administrative Response
Chief Minister Lalduhoma lauded the police for their successful Mizoram drug seizure operations. He said the government remains committed to tackling the state’s drug crisis through both enforcement and rehabilitation. The Chief Minister also directed district administrations to remain vigilant and cooperate closely with enforcement agencies.
The Home Department has proposed stricter penalties under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act to deter offenders. It also plans to establish a permanent task force to coordinate actions among different agencies.
Meanwhile, officials have expressed concern over the growing sophistication of smuggling methods. Traffickers now use modified vehicles, hidden compartments, and courier services to evade detection. This has prompted police to enhance training programs for officers and invest in modern inspection tools.
