The opposition Mizo National Front (MNF) has approached the Cyber Crime Police in Aizawl over an allegedly manipulated video purportedly featuring party president and former Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga.
The party’s Legal Board has described the video as fabricated and alleged that it was digitally altered to make it appear that Zoramthanga had promised annual financial assistance of between Rs 5 lakh and Rs 15 lakh to poor people if the MNF returns to power in the 2028 Assembly elections.
The complaint was filed as political activity in Mizoram begins to intensify ahead of the next Assembly elections.
Party Says Video Was Digitally Manipulated
According to the MNF, Zoramthanga never made the statement attributed to him in the video. The party alleged that the footage was deliberately edited to create the impression that the former Chief Minister had made a major financial promise to voters.
The alleged video was reportedly accompanied by captions mocking the purported promise and was circulated widely across social media platforms.
The MNF has said the content was intended to damage Zoramthanga’s reputation and harm the image of the party.
Complaint Seeks Probe Into Video’s Origin
MNF Legal Board secretary David R Lalsawmtluanga submitted the complaint to the Cyber Crime Police.
The party has urged investigators to identify the original source of the video and establish who created and circulated the allegedly manipulated material.
The complaint reportedly names three social media users whom the MNF has accused of posting or sharing the video. The party has sought appropriate legal action against those responsible.
The allegations remain claims made by the MNF, and the police investigation will be required to establish the origin and authenticity of the video.
Video Circulated Across Multiple Platforms
The MNF said the alleged fabricated video was circulated through several major social media platforms, including Facebook, WhatsApp, YouTube and Instagram.
The rapid spread of digitally manipulated political content has become a growing concern for political parties, particularly as elections approach.
The MNF has argued that misleading material involving political leaders can influence public perception and damage reputations if it is circulated without verification.
The party has therefore asked cybercrime authorities to trace the source and take action under applicable laws.
Legal Action Sought Under BNS and BNSS
The MNF has requested that a case be registered under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS).
The party has specifically urged authorities to investigate the creation and dissemination of the video and identify those responsible.
The complaint represents a formal attempt by the opposition party to address the alleged misinformation through the legal system rather than limiting the response to political statements.
2028 Mizoram Elections in Focus
The controversy comes well ahead of the 2028 Mizoram Assembly elections, with political parties already beginning to strengthen their organisational activities.
The MNF, which governed Mizoram before losing power in the 2023 Assembly elections, has been preparing to rebuild its political presence in the state. Zoramthanga continues to serve as the party’s president.
Other political parties have also started positioning themselves for the next electoral contest, making social media communication an increasingly important part of political outreach.
Growing Role of Digital Campaigns
The alleged Zoramthanga video highlights the challenges political parties face in an increasingly digital election environment.
Edited videos, misleading captions and unverified claims can spread rapidly through social media, making it difficult for viewers to distinguish authentic statements from manipulated content.
Political parties have increasingly approached cybercrime authorities when they believe digitally altered material has been used against their leaders or organisations.
In this case, the MNF has called for the alleged manipulation to be investigated and for those responsible to face legal consequences if the allegations are established.
MNF Seeks Action Ahead of Polls
The MNF Zoramthanga video controversy has added a new dimension to the political preparations underway in Mizoram ahead of the 2028 Assembly elections.
The MNF maintains that the video is fabricated and has asked cybercrime officials to trace its origin and identify those involved in its circulation. Whether the content was digitally manipulated and who was responsible for creating it will now be matters for investigation.
As political activity increases ahead of the 2028 polls, the episode also underscores the growing importance of verifying political content circulated online before accepting or sharing it.
