Arunachal Pradesh’s Puak Ghat riverfront project has won the prestigious FICCI Urban Innovation Award 2025, marking a major achievement for the northeastern state. The award highlights the state’s commitment to sustainable development, eco-tourism, and community-driven urban growth.

The Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) presented the award during a grand event in New Delhi on July 22. Every year, the award honors innovative urban projects that promote sustainability, improve quality of life, and support cultural preservation.

Eco-Tourism Meets Urban Aesthetics

Situated near the district headquarters of West Siang, the Puak Ghat riverfront project has transformed a once-neglected riverside into a vibrant public space. The Arunachal Pradesh Urban Development and Housing Department led the initiative, working closely with local leaders and planning experts.

The site now features eco-friendly walkways, traditional wooden bridges, landscaped gardens, and a cultural amphitheater. Moreover, the project integrates solar lighting, rainwater harvesting, and waste segregation, setting a strong example for sustainable urban planning.

Importantly, the project’s visual design embraces the cultural identity of local communities. It presents a blend of modern utility and traditional charm that draws both tourists and locals.

Community Participation Was the Backbone

From the beginning, the local community played a key role in shaping the project. Local artisans crafted sculptures and murals that reflect the heritage of the Adi community. Elders contributed oral stories and traditional symbols, helping planners preserve indigenous identity.

Youth groups participated in awareness drives and even helped in organizing public consultations. This collaboration fostered a strong sense of ownership among residents.

As a result, the community has actively maintained the riverfront without relying solely on government support. Cleanliness drives and cultural events now take place regularly, further strengthening the bond between people and the public space.

Government and Experts Applaud the Effort

FICCI’s award jury praised the project for its innovative and inclusive approach. They noted how the initiative balanced modern urban development with ecological sensitivity and cultural respect.

Urban Development Minister Kamlung Mossang expressed pride in the achievement. “This award proves that even remote areas can lead with sustainable innovation when citizens and officials work together,” he said.

He also acknowledged the district administration and implementing agencies for their dedication. According to him, the success of Puak Ghat could inspire similar developments across the state.

Economic Impact and Tourism Growth

The riverfront project has already brought noticeable economic changes to West Siang. Local tour operators have begun offering guided walks and cultural tours of the site. At the same time, small vendors and artisans nearby have reported higher sales.

Since the riverfront’s completion last year, tourist footfall has increased by over 40%. Seasonal festivals organized at the amphitheater have attracted visitors from neighboring districts, creating opportunities for hotels, eateries, and transport operators.

The tourism department has recognized the site’s popularity and now includes Puak Ghat in its official travel promotions. This shift not only boosts the local economy but also helps preserve the cultural landscape.

Expansion Plans Underway

Encouraged by national recognition, the state government plans to expand the riverfront. New features will include a bicycle track, an eco-park, and a permanent local craft market. These additions aim to enhance both the visitor experience and local livelihoods.

Officials also plan to add smart kiosks with QR-code-based guides that offer information in multiple languages. Through these upgrades, tourists will enjoy a more immersive and educational visit.

Additionally, the Urban Development Department has committed to conducting regular environmental audits. Local NGOs will continue managing outreach programs and sustainability training for nearby residents.

A Blueprint for Urban Transformation

The success of the Puak Ghat project offers a valuable lesson for urban planners across India. Instead of focusing solely on concrete and infrastructure, the project emphasizes culture, ecology, and participation.

Many small towns and rural districts struggle to balance growth with heritage. However, Puak Ghat shows that development can thrive without sacrificing identity or nature. With a thoughtful design and people-first mindset, even underdeveloped regions can emerge as models of urban excellence.

Pride for Arunachal, Inspiration for India

The Puak Ghat riverfront project stands as a proud symbol of Arunachal Pradesh’s potential. Winning the FICCI Urban Innovation Award 2025 confirms that innovation doesn’t require large budgets—it requires vision, collaboration, and respect for local wisdom.

As more towns in India look for ways to improve public infrastructure and promote tourism, Puak Ghat offers a clear roadmap. It is more than a riverfront—it is a living testament to what communities can achieve when tradition meets innovation.
