Renewable Energy India Expo 2026 to unlock Rs 2,800 cr investment in bioenergy sector: IBA

The Renewable Energy India Expo (REI) 2026 is expected to unlock more than Rs 2,800 crore in fresh investment for India’s bioenergy sector, according to the Indian Biogas Association (IBA).

The three-day event will take place from October 22 to 24, 2026, at the India Expo Mart & Centre in Greater Noida. This year’s expo is expected to place strong emphasis on biogas, compressed biogas (CBG) and waste-to-energy technologies.

The expected investment pipeline comes at a time when the government is expanding policy support for India’s circular bioeconomy. The Union Cabinet approved the Rs 23,731 crore GOBARdhan National Circular Bioenergy Scheme in August. The scheme came into effect on September 1, 2026.

REI Expo Targets Rs 2,800 Crore Investment

The IBA said the REI Expo could generate more than Rs 2,800 crore in fresh investment commitments for the bioenergy sector.

According to the association, this investment pipeline is equivalent to nearly 12 per cent of the Rs 23,731 crore GOBARdhan scheme outlay. The expo will bring investors, project developers, technology companies and policymakers together under one platform.

The association expects these interactions to help convert policy support into new commercial projects. The focus will also remain on technologies that can increase the production and use of clean fuels derived from organic waste.

Biogas Takes Centre Stage at REI 2026

The IBA said biogas will be a major focus of this year’s event. The organisation will power the Bio-Energy Pavilion, which is expected to be the largest such pavilion at the expo so far.

The pavilion will have around 35 per cent more exhibitors than in 2025, according to the IBA. Global technology companies, startups and policymakers are also expected to participate.

The pavilion will showcase technologies related to waste-to-energy, CBG production, co-digestion and digital monitoring. These technologies can help convert agricultural residues, organic waste and other feedstocks into usable energy products.

GOBARdhan Scheme Provides Policy Support

The investment expectations around REI 2026 are closely linked to the government’s GOBARdhan scheme.

The scheme is designed to support the development of a circular bioeconomy while increasing domestic CBG production. It will run until 2035-36 and aims to significantly expand India’s domestic CBG output.

The scheme includes several measures intended to support CBG producers. These include an administered CBG price of Rs 2,110 per MMBtu, assured offtake mandates for the CNG and PNG segments, and capital assistance of up to Rs 2 crore per tonne per day (TPD) for greenfield CBG plants.

The government has also provided support for pipeline infrastructure and credit guarantees under the scheme.

India Targets Higher CBG Production

The GOBARdhan initiative aims to support nearly ten-fold growth in India’s domestic CBG production by 2035-36.

The policy push comes as India seeks to expand alternatives to conventional fossil fuels. CBG can be produced from organic waste and can be used in applications linked to the existing gas-based transport and energy ecosystem.

The IBA said India has the potential to produce more than 62 million tonnes of CBG annually. It also linked the expansion of the sector with opportunities to reduce fuel imports and create employment in both rural and urban areas.

IBA Highlights Wider Role of Bioenergy

IBA President A R Shukla said the country’s approach to biogas is expanding beyond its traditional rural applications.

According to Shukla, biogas can contribute to reducing carbon emissions, supporting farmers, providing transport fuel and enabling green hydrogen production. He also said the policy framework could provide greater pricing certainty and offtake support for the industry.

IBA Chairman Gaurav Kedia similarly highlighted the potential of India’s CBG resources. He said pricing support, capital assistance and offtake mandates could help address some of the sector’s investment barriers.

Expo to Cover Multiple Clean Energy Sectors

Although bioenergy will receive significant attention, REI Expo 2026 will cover a much wider range of renewable energy technologies.

The event is expected to attract more than 70,000 participants from India and abroad. Its coverage will include solar, wind, hydrogen, e-mobility, energy storage and bioenergy.

The participation of investors, manufacturers, technology providers and policymakers is expected to create opportunities for partnerships and project development across these sectors.

Investment Could Support Bioenergy Expansion

The expected Rs 2,800 crore investment pipeline places bioenergy among the sectors receiving growing attention within India’s renewable energy transition.

For the bioenergy industry, the expo provides an opportunity to demonstrate technologies and connect them with potential investors. For policymakers, it offers a platform to present recently introduced incentives and schemes to industry stakeholders.

The combination of government support and private-sector participation could therefore play a role in expanding CBG and other waste-to-energy projects.

REI 2026 to Highlight India’s Bioenergy Ambitions

The Renewable Energy India Expo 2026 comes at an important stage for India’s bioenergy sector. The newly approved GOBARdhan scheme has created a larger policy framework for investment, while the REI Expo will bring industry stakeholders together to explore projects and technologies.

With the IBA projecting more than Rs 2,800 crore in fresh investment opportunities, the event is expected to provide a major platform for India’s growing bioenergy industry.

The focus on CBG, waste-to-energy and circular-economy technologies also reflects the expanding role of bioenergy in India’s broader clean-energy strategy.
