Tripura has recorded a decline in road accidents and fatalities over the past few years. Transport Minister Sushanta Chowdhury highlighted the trend while calling for stronger public awareness and stricter enforcement of traffic rules.
Speaking at a road safety awareness programme in Agartala on September 22, Chowdhury said coordinated action by the Transport Department, Traffic Police and other stakeholders had helped improve road safety. He also stressed that continued public participation remains essential.
According to figures shared at the programme, Tripura recorded 577 road accidents and 261 deaths in 2023. The state reported 578 accidents and 226 deaths in 2024. In 2025, the number of accidents fell to 527, while fatalities also declined. The state recorded 413 accidents and 134 deaths up to August 2026.
Minister Stresses Road Safety Awareness
Chowdhury said accident prevention requires more than enforcement alone. He called for wider awareness of traffic rules among drivers, pedestrians and other road users.
In particular, the minister pointed to overspeeding and hit-and-run incidents as continuing concerns. He urged people to follow traffic regulations and act responsibly on roads.
Meanwhile, the government plans to organise similar road safety awareness programmes across Tripura’s districts. The initiative aims to take information about traffic rules and accident assistance schemes closer to local communities.
Enforcement Measures Continue Across the State
The Transport Department has also increased action against traffic violations. During the programme, the minister shared details of recent enforcement measures.
Officials detected 524 vehicles with non-standard number plates. Authorities issued challans in 485 cases and imposed fines of more than Rs 2 lakh. Notices were issued to another 39 violators.
The department also issued 1,863 challans for violations involving auto-rickshaws. These included permit violations, colour-code violations, parking offences and carrying passengers beyond the permitted limit.
Such enforcement forms part of the wider effort to improve compliance with road safety regulations. However, the minister also stressed that enforcement must work alongside public awareness.
Focus on Helping Accident Victims
Road safety efforts in Tripura are also focusing on assistance after accidents occur. Chowdhury highlighted government initiatives designed to support victims and encourage members of the public to help injured people.
These include PM-RAHAT, the Hit-and-Run Compensation Scheme and the Rah-Veer initiative. The programmes aim to provide assistance to eligible accident victims and encourage timely intervention.
The minister urged elected representatives and local officials to spread information about these schemes. He noted that many people, particularly in rural areas, remain unaware of the support available to them.
Timely Medical Help Can Save Lives
Chowdhury also emphasised the importance of taking injured accident victims to hospitals without delay. Quick medical assistance can become critical during the period immediately after a crash.
He called on citizens to assist victims rather than simply recording accidents on mobile phones. The government has also highlighted safeguards for people who help accident victims under the Good Samaritan framework.
Therefore, public cooperation remains an important part of Tripura’s road safety strategy. Awareness can help people understand both their responsibilities and the assistance available to them.

The decline in reported accidents and fatalities has been linked by the minister to cooperation between the Transport Department, police and other agencies. Regular enforcement and monitoring have also formed part of the state’s road safety efforts.
At the same time, the latest figures show that road accidents continue to claim lives. As a result, authorities want to maintain enforcement while expanding awareness campaigns.
Tripura’s approach now combines traffic enforcement, public education, emergency assistance and greater awareness of government schemes. The transport minister has stressed that continued cooperation among authorities and citizens will be necessary to make roads safer across the state.
