Sonapur accident compensation has been announced by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for the families of those killed in the fatal road crash near Sonapur. The state government will provide Rs 5 lakh to the next of kin of each deceased person. The announcement came after the chief minister visited the accident site and reviewed the circumstances surrounding the collision.
The crash took place on the night of August 30 on National Highway-27 near Khetri in the Sonapur area on the outskirts of Guwahati. A passenger vehicle travelling from Nagaon towards Guwahati collided head-on with a truck coming from the opposite direction. Seven people were eventually reported dead, while several others sustained injuries.

Chief Minister Sarma visited the accident site on August 31 along with senior officials from the administration and police. During the visit, he announced a one-time ex-gratia payment of Rs 5 lakh for the family of each person who died in the crash.
The government also assured free medical treatment for those injured in the accident at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH). Several injured passengers were shifted to the hospital following the crash, with some reported to be in critical condition.
The compensation is intended to provide immediate financial assistance to bereaved families as they deal with the loss of their relatives. However, the chief minister stressed that financial assistance cannot compensate for the loss of life.
Pothole and road maintenance under scrutiny
The accident has also raised serious questions about the condition of the highway. Preliminary findings indicated that the passenger vehicle may have lost control after one of its tyres burst when it hit a pothole.
The vehicle reportedly crossed the highway divider before crashing into the oncoming truck. While the exact sequence of events remains under investigation, officials have highlighted inadequate road maintenance as a possible contributing factor.
Sarma said a police inquiry had indicated that poor maintenance of the highway stretch was a factor behind the accident. He also said the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) had been informed about the condition of the road.
According to the chief minister, the state Chief Secretary spoke with the NHAI chairman, who assured authorities that repairs would be carried out. The administration has also sought closer monitoring of the highway maintenance work.
Investigation to examine speed and other factors
While the condition of the road has emerged as a major concern, the authorities are examining other possible factors as well.
In a subsequent statement, Sarma said the speed of the mini-bus should also be examined as part of the investigation. He noted that the vehicle had crossed the highway divider before reaching the opposite side of the road. Police are therefore expected to assess the vehicle’s speed, road conditions and other circumstances that may have contributed to the collision.
The investigation is intended to establish the precise cause of the crash and determine whether negligence played a role. Sarma has said that anyone found responsible would face legal action.
NHAI given deadline to repair potholes
The accident has intensified concerns over road safety along the affected stretch of NH-27. Kamrup Metropolitan Deputy Commissioner Swapneel Paul said NHAI had been directed to repair potholes on the highway within seven days.
A monitoring committee involving government officials, police representatives, the district transport authorities and local residents is expected to oversee the work. The committee will submit a report on the repairs, with further discussions planned at the Dimoria administrative office.
The issue has also drawn political attention. On September 2, an Assam Pradesh Congress Committee delegation visited the families of two victims, Tafazzul Ali and Jyotika Ronghang. The party expressed condolences and called for adequate financial assistance, stronger road safety measures and urgent action to prevent similar accidents.
