Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha on Sunday, June 1, visited several flood-affected localities in Agartala following heavy rains that have inundated large parts of the state’s capital and surrounding areas. Moreover, the chief minister assured residents that the government is fully prepared to tackle the flood situation. And is deploying all available resources for relief and rescue operations.
Heavy Rain Triggers Flash Floods Across Agartala
Continuous downpours since May 31 have led to severe waterlogging and overflowing of rivers such as the Howrah and Katakhal. Localities in the West Tripura district, including Indranagar, Banamalipur, and parts of Bordowali, witnessed knee-deep water, forcing several families to shift to safer areas.
Tripura CM Manik Saha flood inspection came as a response to growing public concern and distress in flood-affected zones. Further, speaking to media persons during his field visit, CM Saha stated, “All government departments are actively coordinating relief and rescue efforts. We are closely monitoring the evolving situation.”
Relief Measures in Full Swing
The state administration, with support from the Tripura State Disaster Management Authority (TSDMA) and fire services, has initiated large-scale relief measures. Over 20 relief camps have been set up in schools and community halls to shelter displaced families.
Health teams have been deployed to prevent the outbreak of waterborne diseases. The Department of Public Health Engineering (PHE) is distributing safe drinking water and water purification tablets. Electricity and telecommunication departments are working on restoring disrupted services in submerged areas.
Tripura CM Manik Saha flood inspection highlighted the need for long-term flood mitigation projects. Also, “We must work not just for immediate relief but also for permanent solutions to urban flooding. Drainage system upgrades are on the agenda,” said Saha.
Schools Shut, Transport Affected
Due to the waterlogging, many schools in Agartala remained closed on June 1. Public transport was severely impacted, with autos and buses unable to ply in several low-lying areas. Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) has deployed pumps to drain out stagnant water.
District Magistrate of West Tripura, Dr. Vishal Kumar, said, “The administration is working round-the-clock. We’ve received instructions from the chief minister to ensure no citizen goes without food, shelter, or medical help.”
Call for Public Cooperation
The chief minister appealed to the public to stay alert and avoid venturing into flooded areas unnecessarily. He added that control rooms have been set up for emergency assistance and that regular weather updates are being disseminated via social media and local news channels.
“Flood is a natural calamity, but with everyone’s cooperation and timely action, we can minimize the damage,” Saha said during his visit to a relief camp in Bardowali.
Centre Briefed, Additional Aid Expected
Tripura has also sent a preliminary report to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), seeking additional funds and technical support for flood relief and infrastructure restoration. Although, officials from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) are expected to arrive in the state shortly.
The chief minister thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah for their continued support to northeastern states during emergencies.
