Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath recently announced the state’s commitment to expanding solar infrastructure. He aims to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and improve electricity access in rural areas.
At a press conference in Agartala, Minister Nath shared updates on ongoing and upcoming solar projects. He stated Tripura wants to lead the Northeast in clean energy use.

Steady Growth in Solar Energy
Over the past five years, Tripura steadily increased its solar capacity. The state now generates over 26 megawatts (MW) of solar power. Another 50 MW is planned by 2026.
Government rooftops, solar water pumps for farms, and standalone solar units in remote villages are key contributors. The Tripura Renewable Energy Development Agency (TREDA) has helped install many of these projects in districts like Dhalai, Gomati, and Sepahijala.

Cutting Down on Imported Power
Tripura currently imports over 70% of its electricity from the national grid. The government wants to reduce this dependency through local solar generation.

Plans are underway to offer incentives for homes and institutions to install rooftop solar panels. This will boost the Tripura solar power movement further.

In remote villages where grid extension is difficult, solar micro-grids and standalone systems provide reliable power. A TREDA official said, “From Chakmaghat to Gandacherra, solar is lighting up lives.”

Several central and state schemes support Tripura solar power projects. These include PM-KUSUM for solar pumps and the Grid-Connected Rooftop Scheme. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) also funds many initiatives.
Tripura received help from the Northeast Special Infrastructure Development Scheme (NESIDS) to build solar stations in hard-to-reach areas.
Minister Nath mentioned proposals to set up solar parks in Gomati and Unakoti districts. These parks will supply clean power directly to the state grid.

Citizens have embraced solar energy widely. Many households now use solar panels to cope with frequent outages. Schools and health centers also benefit, using solar to power lights and essential equipment.
Solar projects create green jobs too. Local youth receive training in installing and maintaining solar panels. This builds skills and expands the Tripura solar power base.
