Vijay more preferred as PM in Northeast than in South: MOTN poll

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief C Joseph Vijay has emerged as a notable new entrant in the national prime ministerial race, with the latest India Today-CVoter Mood of the Nation (MOTN) survey revealing an unexpected regional trend.

According to the August 2026 MOTN poll, Vijay receives 18.5 per cent support in the Northeast as a preferred choice for the next Prime Minister, significantly higher than the 14.3 per cent support he receives in the South. The finding is particularly notable because Vijay’s political base is Tamil Nadu and his party does not have a significant organisational presence in the northeastern states.

Vijay Ranks Third in National PM Preference

At the national level, Vijay has secured the third position in the PM preference survey, behind Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi.

Modi remains the clear frontrunner with 48.7 per cent support, followed by Rahul Gandhi with 27.1 per cent. Vijay has received 9.2 per cent, putting him ahead of several established regional political leaders.

The survey marks Vijay’s first appearance in the India Today-CVoter MOTN PM preference rankings and highlights how quickly the actor-turned-politician has entered the national political conversation.

The figures also show a substantial gap between Vijay and the two leading contenders. Nevertheless, his third-place position is significant given his relatively recent entry into electoral politics.

Northeast Gives Vijay Strongest Regional Support

The most striking feature of the survey is Vijay’s performance in the Northeast.

With 18.5 per cent support, the region has emerged as his strongest geographical base in the MOTN survey. His support there is more than twice his national figure of 9.2 per cent and four percentage points higher than his support in the South.

Vijay’s support stands at 9.6 per cent in the East and 8.5 per cent in the West, while the North is his weakest region at 4.6 per cent.

The Northeast figure is particularly interesting because Vijay’s political organisation, TVK, has no significant electoral footprint in the region. His support therefore cannot easily be attributed to an established party network or local electoral machinery.

Why Is Vijay Finding Support in the Northeast?

The unexpected regional pattern has prompted discussions about the factors behind Vijay’s appeal outside Tamil Nadu.

Political analysts cited in discussions around the survey have pointed to the novelty factor, particularly among younger voters who may be looking beyond established political parties and leaders.

Vijay’s image as a prominent actor who has recently entered politics could be helping him attract voters who are interested in a relatively new political face. His youth appeal and strong social media presence may also be contributing to his visibility among younger sections.

However, the reasons behind the Northeast numbers remain open to interpretation. The survey itself measures voter preference and does not establish why respondents selected Vijay.

Vijay’s Appeal Extends Beyond the South

The figures challenge the assumption that Vijay’s political appeal is primarily concentrated in Tamil Nadu or the broader southern region.

His 18.5 per cent support in the Northeast is considerably higher than his 14.3 per cent figure in the South. It also places the Northeast well ahead of the East and West.

This does not necessarily mean that Vijay has developed a political base in the region. Instead, it indicates that his name recognition and perceived suitability for the country’s top political office have extended beyond his home state.

For a politician whose party is still building its organisational structure, the finding could be encouraging if sustained in future surveys.

Vijay’s Rise Comes After TVK’s Entry Into Power

Vijay entered electoral politics with the launch of the TVK in 2024. His political journey accelerated rapidly, with the party going on to win power in Tamil Nadu in the 2026 Assembly election and Vijay becoming Chief Minister.

The latest MOTN findings now give a national dimension to his political profile.

TVK leaders have already started discussing a larger role for Vijay in national politics, including the possibility of projecting him as a prime ministerial candidate for the 2029 Lok Sabha election.

The survey results are likely to add momentum to that conversation, although a national political expansion would require considerably more organisational reach and alliances.

Vijay Also Strong as Opposition Alliance Choice

Vijay’s performance is not limited to the question of who should become Prime Minister.

When respondents were asked which current Opposition leader would be best suited to lead an Opposition alliance, Vijay secured 12.2 per cent support, placing him second behind Rahul Gandhi, who received 29 per cent.

Mamata Banerjee received 8.5 per cent, followed by Arvind Kejriwal at 7.5 per cent and Akhilesh Yadav at 6.9 per cent.

The finding indicates that Vijay is increasingly being viewed not merely as a state-level political leader but as a potential national Opposition figure.

Survey Conducted Across India

The August 2026 Mood of the Nation survey was conducted by CVoter.

The survey directly interviewed 25,184 respondents between July 1 and August 25, while another 91,795 interviews from CVoter’s regular tracking over the preceding six months were incorporated into the findings.

As with any opinion poll, the figures represent voter sentiment at a particular point in time rather than an electoral forecast. The 2029 Lok Sabha election remains several years away, and political preferences can change considerably before then.

National Ambitions Face Major Challenges

Despite Vijay’s strong showing in the MOTN survey, transforming popularity into a national political movement would be a major challenge.

His party would need to build an organisational presence beyond Tamil Nadu, develop alliances with political forces in other states and establish a clear national policy agenda.

The Northeast numbers are particularly interesting in this context because they suggest a level of voter interest despite the absence of a significant TVK organisational network.

Whether that support reflects a temporary novelty effect or the beginning of a broader political trend will become clearer through future surveys and elections.

What the MOTN Numbers Mean for Vijay

The latest MOTN findings provide Vijay with a significant boost to his emerging national profile.

His 9.2 per cent national support places him third in the PM preference race, while his 18.5 per cent support in the Northeast makes the region his strongest base in the survey. His performance in the Northeast is even stronger than in the South, where he receives 14.3 per cent support.

For a relatively new entrant to electoral politics, the figures are notable. However, converting survey popularity into sustained political support will require organisation, alliances, governance performance and a broader national agenda.

For now, the MOTN poll has established Vijay as a new name in India’s national leadership conversation—and his unexpectedly strong support in the Northeast has added an intriguing new dimension to his political rise.
