Former Mizoram Chief Minister and Mizo National Front (MNF) president Zoramthanga has described the Mizoram Peace Accord as the most successful peace agreement in India’s history, highlighting its lasting contribution to peace, political stability, and socio-economic development in the state. Speaking on the significance of the historic accord, he said the agreement transformed Mizoram from a conflict-affected region into one of the country’s most peaceful and progressive states.
The remarks come as the state continues to commemorate the enduring legacy of the 1986 peace agreement, which brought an end to two decades of insurgency and paved the way for democratic governance, reconciliation, and sustained development. Zoramthanga, who was closely associated with the peace process as a senior leader of the Mizo National Front, emphasised that the accord remains a model for conflict resolution through dialogue and mutual trust.
He noted that the success of the agreement lies not only in ending armed conflict but also in creating a stable political environment that has enabled generations of Mizos to pursue development in peace.
Historic accord ended decades of insurgency
The Mizoram Peace Accord, signed on June 30, 1986, between the Government of India and the Mizo National Front, marked a historic turning point in the state’s history. The agreement formally ended years of insurgency and violence that had affected the region since the 1960s.
The accord provided a comprehensive framework for restoring normalcy, facilitating the return of insurgents to mainstream society, and integrating former combatants into democratic processes. It also laid the foundation for granting full statehood to Mizoram, which became the 23rd state of India in 1987.
Zoramthanga stated that the peaceful transition demonstrated how political dialogue and constitutional solutions could resolve even the most complex internal conflicts.
According to him, the agreement has stood the test of time because it was built on mutual respect, political commitment, and the willingness of all stakeholders to prioritise lasting peace.
Peace created the foundation for development
Reflecting on the state’s progress over the past four decades, Zoramthanga said the Peace Accord enabled Mizoram to focus on development rather than conflict.
He observed that political stability encouraged investments in infrastructure, education, healthcare, agriculture, and social welfare, significantly improving the quality of life for the people of the state.
The absence of prolonged violence has allowed government institutions to function effectively while enabling communities to participate actively in developmental initiatives.
He remarked that the transformation witnessed in Mizoram serves as evidence of the long-term benefits that peace can bring when accompanied by good governance and public cooperation.
Officials and development experts have often cited Mizoram’s achievements in literacy, healthcare, and community participation as outcomes of the stable environment created by the accord.
Dialogue remains the best path to conflict resolution
Zoramthanga emphasised that one of the greatest lessons of the Mizoram Peace Accord is the importance of resolving disputes through dialogue rather than violence.
He said the agreement demonstrated that difficult political issues could be addressed through negotiation, understanding, and constitutional mechanisms when there is genuine commitment from all sides.
The former Chief Minister expressed hope that the Mizoram experience would continue to inspire peaceful solutions to conflicts in other parts of the country.
According to him, sustainable peace cannot be achieved through force alone but requires trust-building, inclusive discussions, and respect for democratic institutions.
He added that the accord continues to stand as an example of how reconciliation can replace confrontation and foster long-term stability.
Political stability strengthened democratic institutions
Another significant achievement highlighted by Zoramthanga was the strengthening of democratic governance following the signing of the Peace Accord.
He noted that Mizoram has witnessed peaceful elections, stable governments, and active public participation in democratic processes over the years, reflecting the success of the reconciliation process initiated in 1986.
The transition from insurgency to democratic politics allowed former rebel leaders to participate in constitutional governance, reinforcing public confidence in democratic institutions.
The state has since maintained a reputation for political stability and relatively peaceful electoral processes compared to many conflict-affected regions.
According to Zoramthanga, this democratic transformation remains one of the most remarkable outcomes of the historic agreement.
People of Mizoram played a crucial role
While acknowledging the role of political leadership, Zoramthanga also credited the people of Mizoram for embracing peace and supporting reconciliation after decades of conflict.
He said the willingness of ordinary citizens to forgive, rebuild relationships, and work together was instrumental in ensuring the long-term success of the accord.
Community organisations, churches, civil society groups, and traditional institutions also played significant roles in promoting peace, social harmony, and mutual understanding during the post-conflict period.
Their continued contribution has helped preserve the peaceful environment that the state enjoys today.
He stressed that maintaining peace requires the active participation of society as much as political commitment from governments.
Mizoram emerges as a model of peaceful governance
Over the years, Mizoram has gained recognition as one of India’s most peaceful states, with relatively low levels of violent conflict and strong community participation in governance.
The state’s achievements in education, healthcare, rural development, and social indicators have often been linked to the stability established after the Peace Accord.
Officials have frequently described Mizoram as an example of how peace can create favourable conditions for inclusive development and effective administration.
Zoramthanga stated that the state’s progress demonstrates the enduring value of the decisions taken during the peace negotiations nearly four decades ago.
He expressed confidence that future generations would continue to benefit from the foundations laid by the historic agreement.
Continuing the legacy of peace
The former Chief Minister called upon younger generations to preserve the values of peace, unity, and democratic participation that have defined Mizoram’s journey since the signing of the accord.
He emphasised that maintaining harmony requires continued commitment from citizens, political leaders, and institutions to resolve differences peacefully and protect the state’s social cohesion.
According to him, remembering the sacrifices and efforts that led to the agreement is essential for ensuring that Mizoram’s hard-earned peace remains strong in the years ahead.
He also encouraged continued investment in education, youth empowerment, and inclusive development as important pillars for sustaining long-term stability.
A landmark agreement that transformed a state
Describing the Mizoram Peace Accord as India’s most successful peace agreement, Zoramthanga underscored its remarkable legacy in ending insurgency, strengthening democracy, and enabling sustained development. Nearly four decades after its signing, the accord continues to be regarded as a defining milestone in the state’s history, demonstrating the transformative power of dialogue, reconciliation, and political consensus.
As Mizoram continues to build on the foundations established by the historic agreement, the accord remains a powerful symbol of peaceful conflict resolution and cooperative governance. Zoramthanga’s remarks serve as a reminder that lasting peace is achieved not merely through agreements on paper but through the continued commitment of governments, institutions, and citizens to uphold the values of trust, unity, and democratic engagement that made the Mizoram Peace Accord a lasting success.
