Google education partnership is set to give Nagaland’s school education system a major digital boost, with the state government signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Google to strengthen learning methods and prepare students for future-ready careers.
The agreement was signed on August 28 during the inaugural ceremony of the two-day Tech X Gaming Expo (TXG Expo) 2026 at the NBCC Convention Centre in Kohima. The partnership involves an investment of more than ₹10 crore and is aimed at improving learning outcomes through technology and international collaboration.

The Google education partnership is designed to strengthen learning methodologies in schools while equipping students with 21st-century skills. These include digital literacy, creativity, adaptability, problem-solving and the ability to continuously learn and develop new skills.
The MoU was signed by a Google representative and the Principal Director of School Education in the presence of Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio and other officials and stakeholders.
Rio described the agreement as an important milestone for Nagaland’s education sector. He said technology can help the state overcome geographical barriers and connect young people with opportunities in the national and global economy.
The chief minister also stressed that education must remain the foundation of Nagaland’s wider digital transformation. The Google education partnership is therefore being positioned within a broader effort to prepare young people for changes in the workplace.
Technology to reshape classroom learning
The state government’s collaboration with Google comes as Nagaland seeks to make its schools more responsive to technological change. The Google education partnership could support the use of technology to improve how students learn and how teachers deliver lessons.
Rio said future workplaces would demand more than academic knowledge. Students will increasingly need creativity, adaptability, digital skills, problem-solving abilities and a willingness to keep learning.
The focus on technology also reflects the state’s growing interest in areas such as artificial intelligence, software development, data analytics, robotics, digital content and game design.
Nagaland’s Department of School Education has already been pursuing reforms aimed at improving governance, teacher development and digital learning. The World Bank-supported Nagaland Education Project – The Lighthouse, or NECTAR, includes components related to strengthening teaching and learning environments, school management and technical assistance.

The Google education partnership also fits into Nagaland’s wider push to create more technology-driven career opportunities for its youth.
Speaking at the TXG Expo, Rio highlighted emerging fields including artificial intelligence, software development, data analytics, game design, e-sports, digital content, robotics, geospatial technology and race engineering.
He said young people should not have to leave Nagaland simply because suitable opportunities are unavailable in the state. Technology, he argued, can connect local talent with national and international opportunities.
The government is also developing supporting infrastructure. Rio pointed to the 18,000-square-foot STPI centre in Kohima and the upcoming Nagaland Innovation Hub for Startups at Chümoukedima. He also mentioned a proposed Artificial Intelligence Centre of Excellence that could support start-ups, training, employment and technology applications across sectors.
Education reforms gain wider momentum
The new Google education partnership comes amid several education-focused collaborations in Nagaland this year.
In March, the State Council of Educational Research and Training and the Nagaland Board of School Education signed MoUs with Lend A Hand India to strengthen skill education. The initiative includes practical learning for Classes 6 to 8, teacher training and development of teaching-learning materials.
In April, the School Education Department also signed an MoU with the Sarojini Damodaran Foundation for the Vidyadhan Scholarship Programme. The initiative provides financial and other support to eligible indigenous students from government schools, extending assistance from Classes 11 and 12 into higher education.
These initiatives indicate a broader effort to combine academic learning with technology, skills, financial support and career preparation.
Nagaland targets a stronger digital future
The Google education partnership arrives at a time when Nagaland is seeking to build a wider ecosystem around technology, innovation and youth development.
The Tech X Gaming Expo itself brought together gaming, e-sports, artificial intelligence, digital creativity, education and emerging career opportunities. The event also featured the Kohima round of the F1 Sim Racing India Open 2026, marking the national talent-search initiative’s first visit to the Northeast.
For Nagaland, the challenge will now be to translate the agreement into meaningful improvements inside classrooms and ensure that students and teachers across the state can benefit from the technology-driven approach.
