Tensions escalated in Dhubri town on Sunday morning after locals discovered a suspected cow head near a prominent Hanuman temple in Ward No. 3. The incident sparked protests and created unrest in the communally sensitive area.
Local residents gathered in large numbers around the temple premises soon after the discovery. They alleged the act was deliberate and aimed at disturbing communal harmony in the town. Additonally, which has a mixed population of various communities.
Cow Remains Discovered Near Temple Wall
The remains were found adjacent to the boundary wall of the temple around 6:30 AM. Temple volunteers who arrived early to clean the premises first noticed the object. Moreover, they immediately informed local residents and police.
News of the discovery spread quickly, drawing large crowds and resulting in loud sloganeering and road blockades. Shops in the vicinity began to shut down, and many areas observed an unannounced shutdown out of fear of violence.
Police Arrive, Situation Brought Under Control
A heavy police presence, led by the Dhubri Superintendent of Police and local magistrates, arrived at the spot within an hour. Police cordoned off the area, collected forensic evidence, and began examining nearby CCTV footage.
“We are treating this matter with utmost seriousness. Initial clues suggest the object is indeed of bovine origin, but confirmation from the forensic team is awaited,” said Dhubri SP Ranjan Barman.
He added, “We urge citizens not to spread rumors. In addition to, maintaining peace is our priority. We have registered a case and investigations are ongoing.”
Protesters Demand Swift Justice
Protesters gathered at the Dhubri police station demanding a speedy investigation. Many expressed concern that such incidents could be repeated if not addressed with urgency.
“We will not allow anyone to play with our faith. Further, this is a direct attack on our religious sentiments,” said Bhola Nath, a member of the temple committee.
Social media platforms also saw a surge in posts related to the incident. Also, authorities have warned against provocative or unverified content that could incite violence.
Security Heightened in Communally Sensitive Zones: Cow
To prevent escalation, the district administration has imposed Section 144 in several parts of Dhubri town. Also, prohibiting unlawful assembly and public gatherings.
Security has been beefed up around key temples, mosques, and public areas. Furthermore, extra paramilitary personnel have been deployed as a precautionary measure.
According to the district magistrate, schools will remain open but any gathering or procession without prior permission will be considered unlawful.
Political Leaders Call for Calm
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, while addressing a public event in Guwahati, condemned the act and said no one involved in disturbing communal harmony will be spared.
“We have directed the police to investigate all angles. Also, Assam will not tolerate forces trying to break the peace,” Sarma said.
Local MLA Ashok Dey visited the temple and appealed to the public to remain calm and allow law enforcement agencies to complete their investigation.
Community Leaders Urge Unity
Leaders from various communities in Dhubri have come together to defuse the tension. Also, joint press statement was released urging people not to fall prey to divisive elements.
“We must protect the fabric of our town. Let law take its course,” said Maulana Farid Khan, a prominent cleric.
