Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha held crucial meetings in New Delhi with Union Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP National President JP Nadda, seeking greater central support for the development of Tripura’s health infrastructure and other pressing state issues.

The meetings, held earlier this week, focused primarily on advancing healthcare access in rural and border areas, augmenting medical resources, and ensuring that the northeastern state aligns with the broader national vision of a robust, inclusive healthcare system.

Prioritizing Health in Post-Pandemic Governance

Addressing reporters after his discussions, CM Saha—who is also a reputed dental surgeon by profession—emphasized that healthcare remains one of the top priorities of his government. “We have made considerable progress, but there are still gaps in infrastructure, personnel, and technology that need to be addressed. With the Centre’s support, we are confident of transforming Tripura’s health landscape,” he said.

The CM highlighted issues such as the shortage of specialist doctors, the need for modern diagnostic equipment, the expansion of medical education, and the upgradation of district and sub-divisional hospitals. He also stressed the importance of telemedicine services in remote and hilly areas, where accessibility remains a challenge.

Focus on AIIMS-like Institute and Medical College Expansion

One of the key proposals discussed was the establishment of an AIIMS-like institution in Tripura, a long-standing demand of the state. While Tripura already has the Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) and the Tripura Medical College (TMC), CM Saha argued that an apex institute with cutting-edge facilities would not only improve healthcare delivery but also attract and retain medical talent within the state.

He also reiterated the state’s interest in expanding paramedical training institutes, nursing colleges, and postgraduate medical courses to build a self-sustaining healthcare workforce.

Assurance from Central Leadership

According to sources close to the discussion, both Amit Shah and JP Nadda assured the CM of the Centre’s commitment to developing the Northeast and supporting Tripura’s aspirations. The leaders acknowledged the state’s unique geographic challenges and praised the state government’s ongoing efforts to improve maternal health, control vector-borne diseases, and ensure COVID-19 preparedness.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah is believed to have directed relevant departments to expedite the clearance and financial approvals for pending healthcare proposals from the state, while BJP President JP Nadda discussed strategies to align central schemes such as Ayushman Bharat, PM-Ayush and Health and Wellness Centres more effectively in Tripura.

Broader Discussions Beyond Health

While health infrastructure was the central agenda, CM Saha also used the opportunity to discuss border security, connectivity, employment generation, and tribal welfare. He highlighted the strategic importance of Tripura as a gateway to Southeast Asia and requested support for expanding trade infrastructure with Bangladesh, including the Agartala-Akhaura rail link and integrated check posts.

He also reviewed the party’s organizational preparedness for upcoming elections and development outreach programs with Nadda, reflecting the dual administrative and political importance of the trip.

Building a Healthy and Aspirational Tripura

The Chief Minister’s visit comes at a time when the state is navigating a critical phase of growth, with efforts underway to attract investment, enhance infrastructure, and ensure social inclusivity. Health remains a foundational component of these ambitions.

“Tripura deserves the best in healthcare, and we are working relentlessly to ensure that people in even the most remote villages can access quality medical services. With continued support from our central leadership, I am hopeful we will achieve that vision,” Saha remarked.

A Vision Taking Shape

As the Chief Minister returns to Agartala, the expectations are high that his Delhi visit will translate into concrete outcomes on the ground. If the Centre’s assurances are followed through with timely approvals and funding, Tripura may soon witness a healthcare renaissance, setting a model for other small states in the Northeast.
